    SJSM Bonaire Accreditation

    Advertisements

Hi. Does any one know what the present status of the schools accreditation in Bonaire is. I am heard a variety of rumors that the school has to comply with certain requirements failing which they will loose their IMED status. Any information? Thanks

Hi. I'm a student at SJSM Bonaire and I will tell you what's going on. Basically our school needs to renew it's IMED accreditation since it will expire in October. The IMED listing is what allows us to take the USMLE. However, the school MUST have approval from the local government in order to get this renewal. As you may have heard, Bonaire officially became a state of the Netherlands as of 10.10.2010 so the island is now transitioning to direct Dutch control. The Dutch minister of education is unwilling to renew this IMED accreditation because SJSM has not yet achieved NVAO accreditation (which is basically Dutch accreditation). The NVAO has given SJSM 3 years to achieve this accreditation, but the school needs an extension which is not being granted right now. The school is now appealing to the Dutch government bc NVAO is not supposed to be tied with IMED. If this appeal is unsuccessful, we will still be on Bonaire, but just as a satellite campus of Anguilla which does have it's IMED and support from the government of Anguilla. Let me know if you have any questions or if you are confused.

If they transfer a student to anguilla either physically or as using bonaire as a satellite campus they will operate under anguilla's IMED which is only 3 years old vs bonaire IMED which is 12 or 13 years. Also anguilla's accreditation is only provisional and the government will monitor it yearly and revisit anguilla in 2014. I am sure to operate a satellite campus the school will still need the local governments compliance. Is that guaranteed at this point? As a new student it is very disheartening and risky to join a school which is dealing with accreditation problems and legal matters. After all no one really knows the outcome of a legal battle. Has the school given students any written assurance?

We won't be forced to move to Anguilla, but we'll just operate as a sub-campus as you said. The government of Anguilla is a lot more friendly to SJSM than the Dutch and has it a great amount of autonomy. Yes, if we lose our legal case, then we will be under Anguilla and yes it would be considered a 3 year school instead of 13 year school. The school assured us in writing that we could remain in Bonaire and our registration would simply be switched to Anguilla. The administration of SJSM thinks this is the worst case scenario and is confident we will win our case in Bonaire, but I am a bit skeptical like you. I'm not going to lie, our class had 50 people and already 10 have transferred to different schools and a lot more are thinking of leaving.

What I feel is when you are trying to study with this atmosphere and uncertainty I guess it makes an individual less productive. I guess I will have to loose my seat deposit and start else where. I wish we were told this during admissions. We did not hear a word about accreditation's,transfers, legal issues or anything... Just lost a 1000 bucks...awesome! Anyways good luck to you.

SJSM is an awesome school minus these issues we are having right now. The professors are great, the curriculum is good, the facilities are constantly improving. For me personally, I'm going to wait it out a bit and see what happens. But if you feel like the uncertainty is going to stress you out, then I would go to a different school.

I called ECFMG today and St. James wont be able to offer classes in Bonaire under Anguila IMED listing. All courses done in Bonaire wont be recognized for the purpose of USMLE examinations. You can contact ECFMG and confirm that.
