    SJSM accredited by NVAO?

    Advertisements

    Hi everyone,

Does anyone know the status of SJSM with respect to NVAO accreditation?

I only see Saba on the NVAO database. If they are not in the database will this compromise their WHO and IMED listing?

Any clarifications would be appreciated. Thank you!

I replied to your private message about this, but just for other people who might come across this same question: the NVAO is the educational accreditation organization of the Netherlands and Flanders. The school is working toward getting this Dutch approval, but it doesn't have it now and still has its IMED listing and had it's IMED listing before the island of Bonaire switched governments. Part of the accreditation process is adding research to the curriculum, which the school has done.

Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

I got an email regarding that plus other questions from a prospective student, I think it was you. I posted the answers on my latest blog post Medical School Memoirs: Q&A from a Prospective Medical Student, I hope it helps.

Corrections to "Medical School Memoirs" 5/24/2011 blog post:

SJSM is a non-profit medical school; the only one in the Caribbean actually. And, it is not unusual to require a seat deposit for medical school. Most U.S. schools require the same; however, not as immediate, unless, you are accepted late in the process.

To be honest, i don't know how well SJSM did on NAVO. I don't know if SJSM has their NAVO report posted somewhere where its students can read it or not.

My biggest advise is to try to ask if SJSM have their NAVO report posted, and if they do, that means it is good, they are happy with the report enough to post it (and read it), if not, then that is something to think about, and it would make u wonder why they have not posted it.

If someone tells you without themselves reading the report that things are good, or when there is no proof that the school have posted the report somewhere, then take that as an opinion only.

Read the evidence (the report) if it is posted, that would give you the best indication of how SJSM did.

I hope that all the schools that are involved with NAVO pass.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to get in touch with administration and get an update. I will post once I find out.

    Hi everyone,

I just wanted to give you all an update. I spoke to administration ... okay more like admissions regarding the NVAO and St. James. I was told that this process will take anywhere from 2-5 years. However, the school is quite serious about getting the approval and like what other have said (hopefuldoc74) that they have included research as part of the curriculum because it is a requirement. I was told that administration was supposed to have a meeting this month regarding this very issue. As for the school's IMED and WHO status, I was told that it is not a problem. I found the conversation to be very honest and I appreciated that.

I actually got in touch with the NVAO via e-mail regrading this very issue and this was the response that I got back:

"St. James School of Medicine has indeed not been assessed positively by NVAO yet and it is not known at this stage if and when that would happen. However, the current status of St. James School of Medicine (e.g. inclusion in IMED) will at least continue until 2013."

So currently, everything is okay. I am hopeful that the school will get approval before 2013.

Keep in mind the NVAO issue is only for the Bonaire campus. If anything silly happens with NVAO, the school will simply move us over to the Anguilla campus. Don't stress about it!
