My clincal experience @ St James as a 3rd year+4th year and Residency Info

    Advertisements

    Hey guys,
I have not posted on this forum since i transferred into St. James from Universidad Xochicalco in Mexico as a 3rd year med student starting in 1/2007. Here we are now exactly 2 years after my acceptance and 6 weeks shy of the 96wks required to graduate. At the time I was juggling my acceptance into a few others like AUA and Xavier, etc. Looking back, there have been disappointments with St James such as loosing our financial aid, having to secure our own rotations, etc. i could go on. However i realize that these are similar issues that others face even at Ross, St George etc. The point is that now at the end of my med school career all of these experiences have not only helped shape me as a physician but also have taken me to places i never expected to live in! (I started clinicals in Nashville, Tn, then on to Chicago and now in Louisville, Ky!) and ultimately prepared me for residency.
You will realize that during your rotations you will come across our U.S. counterparts and come to the conclusion that while yes we have many disadvantages, we know the same things! and we are all in search of residencies and are all afraid of not matching! So dont feel like you need to have a chip on your shoulder, you are a medical student be proud! and remember that after 4 years of hard work and numerous USMLE's (and they will be tough!) you will be an M.D. and no one can take that from you.
I decided that I love the field of surgery and applied for this years match. My scores are not stellar nor are the mediocre but i managed to secure quite a few interviews. So far i have beeen to south carolina to spartanburg, to neoucom (northeast ohio univeristy coll. of med.) surgery, to texas tech univ el paso surgery, to Mt Sinai univ. surgery in new york (thatll be next week actually) and university of missouri columbia (this one for IM) and a few more. It is an exciting time for me and I am sure I will have no problem matching. In fact as soon as I do ill post my results!
That said, dont be discouraged! Yes, laws are getting stricter for us IMG's but the truth of the matter is that the U.S. needs more docs than there are U.S. grads so these needs will be have to met. St. James is a means to an end so take it as such and remember that there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Take it from a guy who's been there, done that and is graduating from this school as proof.
Finally, the reason why there are few if any posts from students doing clinicals is that once you get there you completely forget about the forum and get your questions answered by residents, other med students or fellow classmates doing rotations in the same city. I am currently at the VA hospital in louisville, ky doing a critical care elective and am a little busy so if i dont answer any questions promptly ill do the best i can. Thanks for listening and best of luck to you!
Any of you guys doing clincals out there good luck on your rotations and students going through the match good luck on interviews and on match day 3/16!!!

    wow thank you

Just wanted to say thank you for your words of wisdom, I mean it, I'm currently in the enrollment process with St James for premed. I know I have a long way to go, But I find myself questioning my decision to study as an IMG. After reading your post, I am more confident about the whole idea.

    Thanks again

Not to sound mean, but going to St James for pre-med is a HORRIBLE idea. It cuts you out of any chance at a Canadian/US school. Do your pre-med in the states and Canada, and then if you have to apply to St. James med school.

Thanks for listening you guys! If you have any questions please dont hesitate to contact me! As far as the last post, I definitely agree. If at all possible do pre med and do med school in the states (it will save you many headaches! + better opportunities for those more competitive specialties)! If that is not an option then persevere and do med school anyway you can. If you are doing a caribbean med school i suggest (even though im going to be a graduate of st james) to apply to ross, st george, auc, or saba. The simple reason for this is that they are all cali approved and this last year has proven ridiculous for state medical boards. For those that dont know, some states are now arbitrarily adopting cali's list of approved and disapproved med schools as their own for basing licensing approval decisions for IMG's. So unless more caribbean schools apply to cali for approval, i believe more states will start to follow. For now i think the states are cali, alaska, tennessee, arkansas, vermont and maybe one or two more. Somehow that list is pretty unimpressive and I doubt many people want to practice in those states anyway (except maybe for cali but oh well). Enough for today. Good luck guys and stay at it! Keep at it for those boards! Ill keep you guys posted as to my match results!

Hey Pilot, it's good to see something positive on this forum for a change. I was wondering what books/PDA software you used during your rotations? What did you carry on you from day to day (i.e. pocket manuals, scopes, et cetera)?

    Thanks

All the best to you Pilot25!!!

I have a question regarding premed. By doing premed at SJSM, will it slim your chances of being able to do residency in the US or possibly Canada, compared to having a bachelors degree from a university.

    Thanks!
