    Accepted student weighing options..Please Help!

    Advertisements

Hello everybody. I am new member on the forum and would like to ask the people on this forum for help regarding choosing the right medical school. I have been accepted to the following three medical schools: IAU, Windsor and St James.

I'm sure the members of this forums have the best knowlegde and experience when it comes to comparing the medical schools, which is why I am proposing the question. Obviously, each school comes with pros and cons (tuition, curriculum, basic sciences time period, etc) but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, there is always one school that is a better choice than the others. Please help me in choosing the best school..I would greatly appreciate the help!

Also if it needs to be noted, I am very uncomfortable to speak in front of otheres in terms of doing oral presentations...very uncomfortable...unless im with a group then im ok..so maybe this should be taken into account.

with all these factors, i hope i am able to be helped by you! thank you so much guys

hey there, I just finished Basic Science at SJSM in December and now studying for Step 1. Let me tell you my feelings on SJSM, after taking my review course I am so happy that I studied on/for my own during my time at SJSM. The professors are smart and intelligent, but they dont have quite a grip and understanding of the material. Mainly because most of them are students who just graduated from Med school in India. They dont have the experience of teaching, nor have most of them passed the USMLE STEPs yet. So their understanding of the material is bout as comprehensive as a 2nd year medical students understanding. I think this can be said bout most caribbean schools as I have been talking to kids in my review class. Its usually the same situation but with better buildings and facilities (unless you go to SGU or ROSS from what i gather). So what i can tell you is that if you choose to go to SJSM, you have a great opporunity to study on your own and get a ticket for step 1, but dont rely on the professors for they arent really quite there. The Anatomy Professor is really great, and the histo prof knows his material for histo, but not for Neuro (as he teach neuro as well). My class had a few issues with professors, so we had our problems, but from what i know of the professors who are teaching now id say study for yourself and you'll be golden. One of the main problems is that the classes are taught based off a Kaplan STEP 1 review syllabus, atleast many of them are, which hurts many students because they are taught a review version of basic science instead of the actual classes. Some people find this a good approach, but for people who have little or no science-bio background this can be a hard thing to understand. You truly miss the finer points of medicine when you're taught in a review fashion.

yes i think it will be around for next 5 years atleast. When the Holland officially takes over Bonaire though I believe the school will move to Antigua, or whatever island they have a new charter for.

Improve, i dont think the school will improve. they have had the opportunity to make it a better place already but administration just doesnt care. For the last three semesters Dr. Gua, the president of the instiution hasnt visited the school. Claims have been made cause he owes the Bonairian government taxes and backfees (but these are only rumors)-most likely cause everytime he comes he gets bombarded with complaints from students, like bout releasing transcripts, library hours and books, loan situation. All important topics which the school hasnt addressed...(sorry they did address the library issue, so we have a library thats open 11-7pm if your lucky, doesnt make any sense cause you're in class till 3-4 anyways).

NY creds....well not anytime soon. The school has to be approved by the US Dept. of Education first, then they can be considered for NY. When i was MD1 a year and a half ago some committee came, but havent heard any word or anything else bout it. But a letter from Shrisha a school official addressing loan issues last semester came to students and she wrote bout the DOA approval taking up to 5 years or so.
