Is there anyone who has gone to the island with their wife? I have been accepted, my wife and I are trying to decide if she should come with me or stay in the state. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi,
I am actually on the island with my wife. I think our situation is a little different, because my wife and I are both attending the school. I know that since she is not attending school, she will be viewd as a tourist (as far as immigration is concerned. However, once on the island, you should be able to update her status as temp resident just like yourself.

It is very difficult to get the same answer from two different people on the island regarding just about anything )and don't even think about anything over the phone). It may be a good idea for her to come down here with you, and see what your options are. If you do that, be prepared for her to go back, and maybe return again. This could take a few months. You could also try to set everything up for her once you get here and have her fly in at a later date.

    I don't know... I hope this helps.

Any hope of employment for significant other?

Is there any hope at all of my significant other joining me and gaining employment in Bonaire? I've ready a lot from the info Bonaire site and other gov. sites about immigration and I understand most of the basics as far as the regulations go, but can anyone down there tell me from their perspective what the probability of finding employment there for a US citizen is?

    Thanks.

    Modoc,

Unless your partner has a skill that no Antillean person has, no Dutch person has, and speaks Dutch and Papiamentu, the chances of him/her finding employment are slim to none. The system is designed to employ locals first and Dutch people second. The only Americans I know who work here legally own their own business or have a skill (e.g. dive instructor--an extremely difficult job to get). Some people work under the table but even that is hard to come by, and you'd be taking a big risk. Sorry...

Your chance of earning any money as a Dive master or Dive instructor on Bonaire is close zero. It is everybody's dream job in the dive industry. If the person has a professional skill - you may have a better chance. (Like in slim to none) of finding work on the island.

Thanks for your honest answers. Are any of the other islands with med schools more employment friendly?

Would a specialization in psychology, healthcare administration or social work (i.e. Masters degree) do anything for employment chances?

Some of my friends at SMU or rather their spouses and S/Os were able to ind some pretty well-paying jobs in financial / computer / banking industry on Grand Cayman. it was still pain in the a**. But once Island compony sponsores you it's a pretty smooth ride from there.

    Good Luck
