SJMS Bonaire 2013. Syllabus? Graduating Time Line?

    Advertisements

I would love to get my hands on a syllabus for MD1 classes, to get a head start. Any current students that would send me this information would be a huge help.

I also have a question about graduating in 3.5 years as they say. If you look on the website it states

" first 16 weeks of the Clinical Sciences course is offered as a block course called the Advanced Introduction to Clinical Medicine.eight weeks of intensive preparation and review for the USMLE Step 1, followed by eight weeks of introductory concepts in clinical medicine"

Does this count for the first core rotation- the 12 week of medicine? Or does the 16 weeks just count as extra time? If you think about it 16 weeks of training after basic science is more then the 12 weeks of our first core rotation so it wouldn't match up anyways.

Sorry kinda confusing. I called the Chicago office and they could not explain it to me.

I can't answer your question directly, but here's another factor you may not realize. By buddy finished his 'island time' (class work) in mid. April. His class was set to come over in groups; the first group started early May, the 2'nd early June, the 3'rd early July. He got stuck in group 3. So he's got some time to study for USMLE Step 1, but my point is, unless you're in group 1, you've got some additional time delay in your schedule.

The first eight weeks in Chicago are for studying for the step 1. Why would they make you chill for three months. ANyone else? come on!

While I don't know for sure, I would imagine the availability of clinical rotations may play a role. Putting the whole class in at one time evidently isn't feasible. While I don't know all the reasoning behind it, I can tell you my friend finished his M4 semester back in April, and he's due to start in Chicago in early July.

I don't know how common this sort of thing amongst the Caribbean schools, but if you're strongly into advance planning, be aware.

I did my undergrad at the university of California San Diego. Unfortunately I didn't take undergrad seriously then. So im going to saint james. In order to be successful sometimes you gotta role the dice. Im going to study hard and I habe a feeling im going to hit the jack pot.

That's my hope. I spoke to him today. His class started back in January 2012. He finished on-island class studies about half-way through April 2013. He heads to Chicago in early July, does AICM (Advanced Introduction to Clinical Medicine), then starts his first clinical rotation. I think AICM is part of the '2 clinical years.' Probably the earliest he can take USMLE Step 1 is Dec.

Be mindful there's more to it than 'graduating.' Most people rely on the Match to get a residency position, and that's a once a year deal. If you won't be graduating in time for that in a given year, could be a problem (like in, sit out a year & try to match next year kind of problem).

Another issue you'll notice on this forum with Caribbean schools in general is that sometimes there are delays between rotations, a supply & demand issue with rotation slots and students pursing them, further compounded by some students wanting to do particular rotations in particular sites, etc... I don't know how common an issue this is with St. James, but if you're trying to narrow down a hard & fast '4 Years from day of arrival & done' type of plan, I think you're going to have to factor in some flexibility.

    Richard.

From looking at the catalog, and other information found on ValueMD, I think the following is a good timeline for January 2014 Student (assuming no failures/repeat of semesters, long (semester-long) breaks)

    January 2014 - Term 1
    May 2014 - Term 2
    September 2014 - Term 3
    January 2014 - Term 4
    June/July/August 2014- AICM (16 weeks)

Say you start in August 2015, 16 weeks puts you at mid-November 2015.

If you are able to get back-to-back rotations with only 5-7 weeks off the entire time you are in rotations, you will be done with all your clinical rotations by the time you are joining residency (July 2017). The likelihood of back-to-back rotations is probably low, because of the limited amount of sites. But if you are not picky and schedule a lot of away elective-rotations in fourth year, you shouldn't have a problem.

P.S. This is just pure speculation. I don't have many stats to back this up, but it's a logical thought process for me.

I just want to know if the 16 weeks after basic counts for core clinical s? Thanks for your input again Richard.
So many people from SJMS and nothing. It would be cool to see this conformed, not doubting you at all Richard.
