    anesthesiology residency

    Advertisements

Can anyone comment on anesthesiology? I notice that a good amount of IMGs place into it and seeing that it'll be in demand now and in the near future, I am curious to learn more about it. Anyone going through it right now? How's residency life for anes? I also hear that there's a 1 year fellowship in Pain Management for anes. Any comments would be appreciated. thanks.

    Anesthesia Residency friend

    Hi-
I have an SGU alumni friend who is in his 2nd year of of residency for anesthesia/pain managment at Yale. HE LOVES IT. Trying to sell me on it. He was a strong student and did about 240 on his step I. Also, he did his clinicals in Jersey. I just corresponded with him this weekend for advice. I can forward that on. He has always given me solid advice and was a huge motivating factor on my arrival at SGU.

    anesthesia

previouslyt was hard. then easy. getting harder again. This year it was predicited it would be very competitive. While moreso than in the last few years it really hasn't "topped out" just yet. but maybe (or not) in the next few?

    anesthesia

It's a decent field...nothing like IM though Hours are good and dont have to put up with the ** that we do in IM inpatient management, social issues etc. Can also make decent money after insurance is paid . There are more fellowships than just pain management - you can do fellowships in Critical Care, Ob, peds, neurosurg and cardiothoracic. While I was doing a month of MICU, one of the fellows was actually an anesthesia fellow - worked out nicely since I had good supervision while doing procedures - IJ/subclavian central lines and Swan-ganz lines etc
Research it some more and do a rotation in it before you decide - I was thinking about surgery or anesthesia before I rotated in each and realized that I didnt want to spend my days stuck in an OR for hours on end
