    Hotels & The Fam

    Advertisements

Could anyone suggest some hotels name that would be in a good, convenient area close to school for the family to stay. The Lonely Planet through out some names, but alas -post IVAN a couple are not quite up running. I think currently we were looking at the Flamboyant (great name) or some Blue Horizon or Blue or Green something place....any comments on these or other suggestions would be great. Mid range, comfy stuff - pref. not too over the top.
    Thanks - Moniqua

blue horizon and flamboyant i believe are right across the street from spiceland mall...umm they dont look too good in my opinion.
i would actually go with grand beach resort or allamanda. its both very close to the grand anse campus and a bus ride away to true blue, althought at grand beach there are no longer school run buses.

    Hotels and the family

Its great that you are bringing your family down. Grenada is a gorgeous island and your family will have a wonderful time. Grenada had dozens of affordable hotels to choose from before Ivan, but most of them are in the process of rebuilding.

There are some really nice and EXPENSIVE hotels here but I am going to just mention the ones with the student discount. If you are intrested in some higher end hotels just ask.

I would highly recommend the Rex Grenadian. It is a very nice hotel and it offers a student discount, you can get a hillside room for 70$US a night, or an ocean roomview for 100$ per night. This rate includes a really nice breakfast. When you speak with them you MUST tell them you are a student because they block of only a select number of rooms for this discount. The only drawback to the Rex is that it is not on the SGU bus route and your family will have to take taxi's back and forth to school.

Another hotel that offers student rates is the Grande BEach. I am unsure of their rates, but I do know they are more expensive than the Rex. Grande Beach does have its advantages: your family could easily walk to the bus route bringing them to school and secondly it is located on Grande Anse Beach which is argueably one of the nicest beaches on the island. I have also found Grande Anse beach to be calmer wave wise than the Rex beach.

    Hope this helps!

    Try

    Try True Blue Bay Resort...

I believe they have a website as well and offer decent prices and are within walking distance to the campus. You can also see the campus from their location across the little bay that separates them from our campus. Their rooms are very modern and spacious as well.

Umm, is the Rex open yet? AFAIK, it is still undergoing Hurricane Ivan repairs....

I checked out the website. This place looks really lovely.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

    Hotels and the family

The Rex is open a number of people I know have stayed there in January. I have have resrvations for next week.

True Blue bay resort is the closest to school...but i already checked availability for that week and they only had a few random dates with nothing continuous. True Blue is walking distance to school but its about a half mile away and the cab will run you about 20Ec for an additional 5EC towards cab fare your family could stay at the Rex and have a beach, (True blue bay resort does not have a beach), have complimentary tea in the afternoon, and free breakfast. True Blue Bay resort is also home to Stuarts bar which can get roudy with Vet and medical students. The rex is best overall cheaper, more inclusive, and there is a pretty nice beach.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

Hey thanks all for the suggestions - definitely helpful - especially when they all just show sand and water in the pictures. I think we looked at Calabash too - any comments about that place? Since I'm coming a little early, I just realized that we'll be down for Carnival -- do places (like non-touristy stores) close like holiday time for those 2 days?
    Thanks again

    higher end hotels

Calbash is a very very nice hotel. Rates at the calabash can run you from 535-850 US per night, but you get a maid to serve you breakfast in your own villa. The restuarante menu is designed my a famous English chef and the food is really good, in the fancy sorta way. Beautiful hotel, nice beach its found in Lanse Epeix, a school bus route does pass the hotel entrance. There is a really good restuarant walking distance from it called the Red Crab, be sure to check it out.

Another amazing hotel, my personal favorite, is LaLuna. Also very pricey, but you get you own villa. Somewhat of a trek though as the road it pretty bad due to ongoing constructino. A cab from LaLuna will run you about 50EC one way to school thats about 20US. Even if you do not get a chance to stay at LaLuna be sure to eat at there. It has amazing ambience and the food is also out of this world. LaLuna was actaully used for a sport illustrated swimsuit issue, and is rated one of the top boutique hotels in the carribean. A night on the MAP rate, including only breakfast will be about $272US-570 per night. Well worth it though.

Flambouyante is also pretty nice my parents stayed there on their first visit here. Its right on grande Anse beach and it has amazing views. Short walk to school bus route. About $180 per night no including breakfast.

I also have some good dining tips, if you are intrested.

For those intrested carnival is an amzing experience, if you are here be sure to check it out!

Which ever hotel you choose as long as it on a beach, you will have an amazing time. Having traveling the caribean extensivelyI can safely Grenada is a gorgeous island you can truly find natural beauty here whether it be the rainforest, mountains, beaches...

If you need any numbers, places to eat, jsut pm me. My parents love to come and visit so I know alot abotu rates and places to stay and eat.
