Thread: Health Insurance Question

Hey guys. I've been having trouble getting a straight answer from admissions, so I thought I would ask here. Here in the states, my husband and I have good health insurance through his company which we will be able to keep while we are in Grenada. The problem with that of course is that all of the offices/hospitals are in the states, so we wouldn't have access to them. But if there was an emergency, we would have good care in the states (we will definitely get the evacuation insurance as it is cheap), as well as the benefit of having established health insurance when we return to the states.

I'm trying to figure out what the benefits of getting health insurance through the school are. Is in mainly for services in the states or does it offer something extra in Grenada? If we don't have insurance from the school, do they deny you care for something routine, such as a simple doctor's visit? The main reason that I ask is that for both my spouse and I, health insurance through the school would be considerably more than we are paying now, so I'm wondering what the benefits are from getting it through the school.

I am also scared that something happens to me over there and I am moved back to state and I won't have an insurance that covers me here.

you techinically dont need to submit ur hep B titer until u start the clinical rotation (yr 3 and 4)

there is a clinic on campus that basically is free to students, but if you need meds or lab work done or to be sent to the hospital then there will be a fee that you have to pay outta ur own pocket if you dont have the school's insurance. but if ur US insurance like mine is willing to reimburse u, then u will get the money back eventually.

the worst that sickness that i have seen ppl here get is dengue and giardiasis. some can tough it out without any meds some will need medical attention.

if you ar worry about like trauma, i havent seen any...at least i hope there arent any.

what i would do is keep ur stateside insurance because if you dont provide any health insurance, you cant register. but if you are really worry about covrerage in GND, then i would go with the SGU one.

I think i probably leave my insurance. I hope nothing will happen to me in GND. =) I will just hope and pray that I will be ok down there. For the Hep titier, it was my fault, I thought I needed to finish for next year term 3 instead of yr 3 and 4. That's good. Thanks jaywalk, you and emt are the best people on VMD.
