    Calling Home

Has anyone used either vonage or Skype to call home while on the islands? How do they work what plans did you get etc. Thanks
That's my 2 cents and I want some change back.

    phone options

My mom and stepdad set up Skype to use when they are at their house in Belize. At first it was shaky, but apparently they were using the beta version. They say that now it works really well and they advise using Skype over Vonage. They actually use it from the United States to call Belize too, I think? Also, if someone in the US has it, they can talk to someone in another country for free, I believe. They said it's cheaper and you can call anywhere, instead of just the US and Canada. I haven't actually researched this to get exact numbers, so I might be wrong, but I thought I would pass this along...

    re

well i checked skype and i think u do have to pay for international calls but its very cheap. one little problem i heard that for the first term the dorms only have internet access in the reading room and i dont think u can make a call and talk infront of other people but maybe thats just me, or better u could just use it on campus as the guide said is wireless at least most of it. hopefully this helps.

Let me clarify. I meant that if you set up Skype in Grenada and your friend in the US sets it up on their computer as well, then you can talk for free.

there is various wireless places on campus that you can find thats not in a study room or a lecture hall. and you can get a little more privacy there.

I personally use Skype, I have used it to call all over the world, and I am quite impressed with the clarity of the calls. If someone else has skype on their computer (ie skype computer to computer calling), then the call is free, you only pay when you call a regular telephone line. There are lots of places on campus where you can get wireless to make phone calls, its just inconvenient coz you cant call in like your room, but you get used to it, what can I say, just like everything else over there.

seeing we didnt have internet at grand beach last term, and i forgot to bring my mic down anyway, i didnt use any of those online phone services. I used the cell phone I purchased in Grenada. With ATT wireless, calls to the US were 96 EC cents per min and calls to my phone were free so I'd just call home and tell them to call me back. For some reason or another, my mom's phone company stopped billing her for her calls to Grenada so all in all it cost me 96 EC cents to talk as long as I wanted And no, the same thing will probably not happen to you (seeing it is a local phone company specifically to my area) so dont ask me why or how it happened.

yeah, i did the same thing as Dr. Masr, but I one upped him...i call and let it ring once, and my parents have caller ID phones, so when they see my number they just call me back....don't even spend the 96 cents EC!!

as for privacy, people will sit in the hallway outside the study lounges and talk quietly or go to places where there is more public access, like glovers, and use the internet to call home from there. they added wireless to the student center(where glovers is), which makes it a lot easier to do the internet calling and whatnot...

good thinking. I probably will do that too.

I hope Grenada goverment doesn't have any restriction on Skype or other services. I used to talked to my friends in Burma but now the goverment restricted it. No more skype to Burma (some hacker can still use it in Burma, don't know how).
