Applying to American school while attending Carribean school

    Advertisements

Has anybody ever filled out AMCAS in the summer, went to Carribean school in the fall, and then been accepted to an American school, quit Carib and started from year one in the US? If so, would starting at a Carib school hurt your chances of acceptance?

Thanks for the info, this is my first post.

yes. in terms of will it hurt you: i know of someone who just graduated in fact who was told by a US school that person was trying to get into that if they attending a carib school, they would look less favorably on them. For other schools, it wont hurt. So luck of the draw. What are your circumstances? Are you boarderline? Is this your first time starting? Do you realize you wont get money back etc.

Re: Applying to American school while attending Carribean sc

Hi Stephew thanks for the response!

Money would be no issue and I don't mind starting from scratch if I do get into a US school...I just thought if I don't, then at least I would have one year at the caribbean already under my belt. I guess you could say I'm borderline, 34R MCAT and 3.3 gpa. I'm Canadian and I know that starting at SGU would kill any hope of getting into a school in Canada, so that's why I'm hesitant to start this august at SGU.

Thanks again Stephew, all the best!

    advice

Dear Student: a VERY valuable advice: do NOT lie about the fact that you got into a carib school. A friend of mine was ithe situation described: started at carib and applied for us school, got an interview and was asked "did u attend any other school" he said "no" and he was REJECTED not because he went to carib school, but because he LIED and they apparently found out from the LOANS he took out for the carib school!!!!by checking credit history! Notice, they knew he went to carib school and STILL invited him for interview, but when he lied about it, he was told that his dishonesty got him rejected. hope this helps
also, there are couple people who do transfer AFTER rocking the USMLE step 1 but usually have to repeat second year.

Being canadian, just make sure you are aware of visa issues that you will face when pursuing residency in the US. If you wish to do residency in Canada, start your research NOW on how to return back.

    Good luck,

    thanks for the info

Hi manoutofthemoon and almd2b, thanks for the advice!

I know about the troubles of returning to canada and the visa issues for the U.S. I'm also contemplating moving to Manitoba where the U of M weighs MCAT as 50% and GPA as 10% (the other 40% is volunteering, etc.) I think I have a strong chance of acceptance if I were only a resident of Manitoba...it would take two years of living there to become a resident, but I don't know if I could put my dream on hold for two years. So I have a lot of thinking to do...start SGU now with chance of acceptance in the U.S. or wait two years for Manitoba...

    Take care and thanks again!!

I would advise you to not move to an area where you "think" you will get into because in the event you arent accepted, you will have lived somewhere else for 2 yrs trying to get into that school and will have lost 2 years.

    Thanks dvp95

    Thanks for the advice dvp95!

It's a tough decision, but I think I'm leaning towards starting at SGU this august and putting in my AMCAS application at the same time, instead of waiting two years in Manitoba with no guarantees, just like you said. I'll let you know how it goes...

    Take care

I know a guy who got into a US school after attending SGU.

I think he was waitlisted "back home" and then did terms 1 and 2 (started Aug 2004). Ironically, he failed something at SGU - Neuro.

I was talking with him about what he was going to do and he said he'd gotten into a US school. The thing is that I don't think they knew he was at SGU. He was starting all over.
