    SGU ALumni

    Advertisements

There is talk of doing away with signing outside the match starting around 2004-5, I think. WHat are your views on that since alot of students currently (I heard about 33%) sign outside the match? I guess what I am asking is do you feel that it will help open doors we havent had in the past by forcing us to go throuh the match or hurt sgu students?

    Thanks.

    Outside match

Its not talk its a done deal for 2004 as far as I know

Do I think its a nice option to have: yes. Do I think it will hurt most sgu students? No. THis is why.

If a hospital wants to sign someone out of the match they take that option because they feel they k now you, you will work well there and they feel their options in the match aren't so strong as to find someone-and pardon this phrase- "better". So now we all have to go through the match. Still, you've rotated at a place, they know you, they like you, they still dont feel they will be a hot commodity, thus they will rank you very highly. It takes away some security yes but I think for the most part things will settle at the same level. It may even help some who would have "settled" out of fear. It is possible some will be hurt; there may be weak students who would have signed outside the match and who may be ranked highly..just not highly enough, or who "play" the match game wrong. But I think for the most part it will work out ok.
Tiome will tell (I hope only sgu will).

    Good and bad

Like you said it will be both bad and good. Bad becasue it will cause more anxiety to prospective residents. The match can be stressful (I went through it). Once you are offered a spot outside the match you are relieved (if you like the place that is). By not being able to sign, yes, one IS forced to apply and possibly get a better spot, but also programs will now rank others above you hoping maybe to get them and then rank you further down the list. Before, scared that they may not match all spots they offered contracts outside the match. Now they cannot do that so they maight as well rank those "US MDs" first.
We will always get good spots no matter what - it will only be a bit more stressful. That's the bottom line.

    pre-match

I just looked this topic up on the web 2 weeks ago, and there was a big article saying that the pre-match is NOT going to be discontinued....have there been changes? Or are they thinking of getting rid of it for the 2004-2005 match?
Also- I was under the impression that generally people who have issues with US visa status were the only ones who pre-matched. (Maybe that is because those are the only people who I know who have done this).
    just curious.,,,

    delay

Indeed I stand corrected; some squeaky wheel with good connections has managed to get the implementation of the "new rule" for the "must go through the match" rule delayed. HEre is the link to the letter.
