Resident/physician opportunities in the military reserves

    Advertisements

    Hello,

A little background info first- I recently finished up with the SGU graduation requirements a few weeks ago (no diploma until May, so I guess I can't officially say I've earned the "MD" yet ), and have signed a prematch contract for a position in IM.

My question deals with opportunities for residents in the military reserves, particularly the Navy and Air Force reserves. Have any of you any direct or indirect experience with these options? Rumor has it that students can sign with the reserves once the residency contract is in hand, and in exchange for duty following residency will receive a certain yearly stipend during residency on top of the normal resident pay. Though I am quite familiar with the benefits for those seeking active duty, I am particulary interested in opportunities available in the reserves. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    call the recruiter.
I looked into that a long time ago and at the time there was a requirement about graduating from a LCME or AOA approved school.

Take a long hard look at the numbers, the stipend and years that you'll owe them. Crunch the numbers and see if it's worth it in the long run.

Find out how many "reservists" just called up to go and hang out on the Hospital ship in the persian gulf...or in south korea, etc.

I think that it is something like $500 for the weekend each month that you serve, plus there is an incentive depending on your specialty which is something like $15K extra a year, but then you will owe them 2 extra years for each year that you are on that particular program. So if you have an 8 yr comittment and recieve the stipend for 1 year, you will serve a total of 10 yrs. They also have bonuses here and there and other benefits. But the truth is that if you're doing it for financial reasons (the recruiters main selling point), you'll be disappointed. If you're doing it for honor, friendships, and outdoor activities, then you might have found the right place. In theory, you will serve 1 weekend per month and 2 weeks per year. But of course this could change if you're called up for active duty...then you could be gone overseas for >1 yr...even though the chances are slim, we are at war right now . Good luck.

I knew some students who did it in other majors that had much worse career outlooks.
The one that had just started loved it, the others that were longer into it hated it...
