A single for a first termer on campus is almost unheard of. You'll have better luck finding one off campus where I'm sure there are plenty. Housing office has a listing of off campus places I think.

A single for a first-termer will not happen. You can either live in doubles on campus (or in hotels if they are still going to be doing that), or you will have to get permission from the housing office for living off-campus.
