Simple, Good, Bad, Ugly questions for CURRENT STUDENTS (need this? need that?)

    Advertisements

This forum has helped me via FAQ, sticky threads etc... to prepare me for my January 2014 entering term. Also, the welcome student site on SGU helped a lot as well.

I have some random/simple questions to those current students on the island, hopefully it will help a lot of recent accepted students who will enter the campus soon

thanks for your comments in advance!

    1. Do dorms get wifi everywhere? I'm sure library, school buildings, and lecture halls get wifi for sure?

    2. Do we need Phone? would like feedback from CURRENT students especially. Nowadays with whatsapp, skype and everything, I (here in NY) use phone probably 1~2 times a day at max, I communicate with friends here via mobile chat app etc. Do you guys all sign up for the phone on the island? how often do you use them? is it possible to just live with our iphone/galaxy that we bring to the island (wifi)

    3. I've been searching flights lately, and it seems like there's one NONSTOP, and bunch of 1 STOP flights from JFK. Would nonstop be more efficient? I know it's about $300 more expensive, but i can just go through one plane, which is perfect for all the luggages i'm bringing

    4. Is it easy to book flights for summer/winter breaks? what do you guys usually use? Caribbean Airline?

    5. I heard we have to pay tax(?) for high end stuff we bring in, such as laptop etc. Is this true? Is this applied to even my iphone/galaxy, wristwatch I got for graduation gift etc?

    6. How easy is banking? I plan to put fund in my checking account here in NY and use my Visa card at the ATM on Grenada campus

    7. How did you guys ship all the stuff when you first entered the island? did you use shipping companies to ship your extra luggages? or just traveled with them?

    8. When is the best time for friends and families to visit the island?

    9. Do families usually come for White gown ceremony?

    10. Blanket for bed. We have to bring them? (i understand the pillow part...)

    1) Only school building/lecture/library get wifi.... if you lucky. Dorm no wifi.
    2) I use a burner phone I get from the tents you'll see first day of class. You will lose a lot of phones during first week of school, after sandblast/unityball/welcome back party/basically anything with rum. I use to use an iphone, but no point. No data plan or wifi across campus.
    3) Good luck with flights, it's hard to get the perfect one.
    4) I book it after midterms, just in case...... You book it during breaks gonna COST YOU because everyone is booking the limited flights.
    5) Laptop tax isn't bad if you just go to ebay and find a closed auction of your laptop and print it. So you get taxed for it's CURRENT value instead of when you bought it brand new. Tablets and so on I think school implemented so they cover all incoming 1st termer. School pays a flat rate, which you pay through tuition, so you don't have to worry about getting ripped off for tablets. Not sure about laptop, call them.
    6) I have an international visa card, and a ATM visa card. Didn't need a new bank account.
    7) I didn't ship stuff. I just shoved stuff in 2 luggage and 1 carry on.
    8) Up to your discretion. There is family week. That is nice so you won't have to entertain them whole time.
    9) Some have family over and some don't.
    10) Bring a nice juicy fat blanket. AC be cold.

You should PM Craigslist. He's a 2nd termer that is known around here for being VERY HELPFUL to incoming FEMALE students.

I'm not sure why, but I'm currently in tears. Rolling on my bed in tears.

Rule #1 at SGU. Nothing is 'for sure' at SGU. Wifi in lecutre/study areas. Ethernet connection in dorms.

With the wifi being as stated, yeah a nice Nokia from Digicel will serve you just fine. You might make friends down there so you may want to be able to talk to them.

IMO, the nonstop from JFK is totally worth it. So much easier esp with multiple heavy bags.

The flights from JFK changed like every term when I was flying. Air Jamaica, then no one, then Delta, then Caribbean Airines. Who ever takes over that flight pattern is who I would go with. Otherwise, you can fly to MIA or PR then to GND.

Back in my day, it was just laptop but that was kinda before the tablet took over. Not sure how they are now.

I just used a Capitol One credit card for almost everything. No international fees. And then pay the bill from my US account. I would bring a chunk of cash and convert it down there for those things, or would pay the $5 fee from my bank if I needed more cash.

Brought it all in my luggages. Had one carry-on luggages and 2 checked luggages.

Never. No time is a good time. It always felt like them being there was interfering with something.

    I can't answer this. I'm giggling again.

The fact that you would want to use an SGU issue blanket skeeves me out. If you dont want to bring bedding (not sure why) you can get something from 'Linen and things' in the mall. Don't think they are great quality and are probably expensive.

    Wait,
    No Wifi in the dorm?????....wow
ethernet cable is avilable, that means schools provide internet throughout dorm and all I need to do is bring in ethernet cable and I can use internet without registering/going through cable companies etc etc, correct?
    Just want to make sure...
