the big key is taking ownership of your failings...yes, having such traumatic news at such a crucial time is unfortunate, but your decision to go forth may have not been the best and one exam should not cause you to fail...the APC is going to want to know that you learned something from this experience and have a plan how not to repeat the situation.
you can't go into your appeal blaming outside forces...that's a recipe for disaster...and dismissal...

Im sorry to hear about your circumstance, I know personally how hard it can be. I think there are a lot of factors that come into play like how well you did on your midterm and how far off you were from a passing grade but personally I would appeal and not withdraw. I think rokshana's advice is the best. Take ownership of what happened, be honest and take time to think about what happened and why. If you think you need help get some during the summer and tell them what exactly you want to do about it. If you feel you might have some other academic related issues then tell them. If you can show a difference in scores to show how you were effected then point that out to them. get a death certificate if thats what it takes. don't hold back, whatever the reason is they need to know it. Good Luck.

thanks for all the suggestions guys. been about a week and half since i sent it it, still waiting for an email back
i received my official decision yesterday from ECAPPS and i'm really shocked right now. i was wondering if anyone here has any knowledge of people being able to fight their case again to the committee? i've read here on a 2011 thread that people who were dismissed were granted an opportunity a little later on to re-appeal the decision.
my situation involved not doing so well in term 2 - my midterms were all extremely poor due to family issues back home, but i did not want to decel and really worked my *** off to do well on finals. i missed passing a big class by a few points. my total gpa percentage is above a 73.
if anyone could talk to me about this, i would be really grateful. i just feel devastated right now
I believe if you had a GPA percentage below 75%, you are on academic probation. So they can easily kick you out if you fail a class. Were you able to tell your adviser your situation before you fail your classes? Such as a family issue back home? My adviser told me during orientation, she'll be on my side in these situations in the future as along as I told her any personal situation that may occur. Otherwise she said if I wait till I fail, and then mention it, her hands will be tied and won't be able to help.
hi thxleave, thanks so much for replying...i did not speak to my advisor about my issues after midterms, but i did go and speak to the professors whose classes i did extremely poorly on, and ask their opinion on the matter. i explained my situation and they were very supportive, and recommended that i decel. if i had another chance (besides doing my best to not even be in this predicament in the first place) i would have done just that.
i thought that the professors involved would have had some say in the committee, if anything to verify that i jumped up drastically in grades from midterms to finals in their classes...
also - i don't think i was on AP after first term bc i was above a 75 going into this term; i also was never notified that i was on AP.

I'm in the same position as taaa-surf. No academic probation above 73% cGPA and dismissed. Failed one course this semester. I know of one other person in similar situation.
