    Luggage Issues

    Advertisements

    Hi all,
I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about what is going on down here about luggage.
Since Carnival is Monday and Tuesday the planes (and I MEAN ALL planes are full, full, full and not all bags are making it on to the planes, so everyone is having to wait for bags
I came down on Air Jamaica last Saturday and ,luckily, I got all my bags, but my sister came down on Monday, missing one bag (that was USAir), but got it the next day. My roommate came down on Tuesday (on Air Jamaica) however, and got 1 of 4 bags(they forced her to check her carry-on!) and only received all her bags yesterday(4 days!!). And its only going to get worse!!
The bigger problem though is the lack of help and concern shown by the people in the airport. Trying to get help is sooooo frustrating and they act like you are SUCH an imposition to them. Also they will not tell you that you are allowed compensation for lost bags (US$25 per day with a max of 125)Make Sure you DEMAND compensation. If everyone who was allowed compensation actually got it, it would be so costly to the airline that they wouldn't so easily take off bags off of the plane.
So make sure you have what you need for a few days with you and ask Mrs. Fletcher (with Air Jamaica at least) for compensation(and get receipts for EVERYTHING- taxis, parking, any replacement things). Also make sure that THEY pay for your taxi when you do get your luggage(they will but you have to ask).
    Good Luck everyone!!

Did your roomate take a direct flight on Air jamaica? I heard that taking direct flights are not usually as bad in reference to losing luggage. thanks

    good attitude

    hey...
Kudos to rokshana for demanding her fair compensation for delayed luggage. I URGE everyone to do the same. I've rarely had problems with luggage in going to grenada or vinnies (I always took AA since Air Jamaica was just starting to fly to grenada when I was leaving).
I think the airlines get away with murder and it's such an inconvenience to people that they can't begin to fathom. So continue to ask for compensation for your precious time wasted and your inconveniences. And if they make a bad face, write complaints to whoever you can including better business bureau and FAA or whoever. Maybe they'll learn then....
Sounds vindictive? Not really, I just think people at the airlines feel they can do crap and get away with it cuz people won't complain about it....

    re:

What a lot of people don't know is that when a bag doesn't arrive you can have it delivered to campus. They bring it to security in front of the school. Make sure you ask for that at the airport.

    Cheers,
    Yadira

    luggage

    Hey all,
Yes my roommate did take the direct flight from NYC. The problem is that there are just too many people for the flights and many are bring a TON(sometimes I think that its literally that much!!) of luggage and they(the airlines) don't separate out the excess bags from the rest, so...
The compensation of 125 is just for not having your bags (and having to come to the airport, etc.), so ask for it if you don't get your bags, even on the 1st day. If your bags are permanently lost, then compensation is different (and unfortunately it is different from domestic compensation)--US$12 per pound lost(so ~840 for a 70lb bag), though it is possible to get up to 15 per lb since they inconvience you for a whole semester not just a few day like a tourist.
My roommate didn't have to show any receipts(though some airlines i.e.USAir will ask for them)so get receipts for everything(taxi, parking , etc.)
As for having them deliver the bags, the last time my roommate lost her bags(she doesn't have very good bag karma) they didn't call her and her bags just sat there for 2 days, so ... since anyone and his uncle can pick up your bag and walk out, I wouldn't really want to take the chance of having bags just sit there.
Anyway, I wish everyone good bag karma (and see if Istill have some since I have to fly back to the States this weekend and come back on Sunday with all you 1st termers!!!(BTW, 8:00AM classes are a real pain in the ***!!!).
