Stethoscope is good; I got one for Xmas after my first year. Littman Cardio 3 and the Littman Master Cardio are decent.
I want to buy a gift for someone that will be starting med school at St. George's this semester. I was thinking stethoscope or a textbook. Any suggestions on gifts would be great. Will be spending $100 to $200.

I second Ishie on the steth, but I'd recommend the Welch Allyn Harvey DLX instead of the Littman - it's much easier to use, looks like it's built to last forever, and most importantly you can really hear things even as a totally clueless 2nd year student. One person in our group had the double head version (I know there is a triple head, but it might be overkill) and it was much easier for everyone to hear through that steth than through all the Littmans the rest of our group had.

Buy the stetho when they are entering clinicals
Don't buy them a book. They will be completely disappointed. I third the stethoscope idea. You can get them engraved with initials if you want it to be a little more personal.

I agree with the stethoscope idea.
By now you must get the idea, but if you didn't, I 5th Stethoscope and preferably Welch Allyn Harvey DLX. My brother in law uses it. You can even hear the conversations on the other side of the wall, not that its recommendedGood luck with it.
