    Luggage

Right now I'm in home in LA and I'm starting second term in August. Now going to this school is definitely an experience where you learn from many mistakes that are beneficial in the future. But if there is one thing I wish I was informed about before I left I would have been very happy, and its regarding luggage. The first time I flew to Greneda, I had two bags. I checked them in at LAX. I arrived in JFK for an 8 hours stop over then I flew to Greneda. They told me in LAX that my stuff would go straight threw and I would not have to pick up my luggage at the carousel, in JFK. My bags never arrived and they didn't show up for ten days. And when they did show up 200 dollars worth of stuff had been stolen from them, cause they ended up sitting in an airport in Jamaica for 7 days. I suggest you insure your luggage in you have anything of value in them. If you have a connecting flight request that you want to pick up your luggage at the connecting airport and recheck it in, because being without any of your stuff in Greneda really sucks. Oh ya and if you can lock your bags some how, do it. Good luck to all first termers you will have a great experience in Greneda, SGU is an amazing school!!

    San Juan

    Thanks for the advice!

Can anyone say anything about San Juan on whether or not the same issue exists with a connecting flight there? Do people pick up their luggage there for the connecting flight?

Yup, there are a few threads complaining of luggage delays... If you are flying American from San Juan to Grenada, it will be in a smaller turboprop plane... and if the plane is "overwieght" in San Juan, they will leave your luggage there. It will come a couple of days later (hopefully) on a less heavy plane (happened to me.) Same will happen with AA on the return trip... however the baggage handlers in Grenada have been known to put "excess" baggage on the plane for a tip....

Oh and to the OP, you can only lock your luggage with TSA-approved locks, otherwise they will cut it off...

    Box vs Suitcase

Thanks for the response.... Do people usually bring a box or a suitcase down with them? A box seems like a good idea because of the larger storage capacity and usefulness for storage between terms but because a box can't be locked (to prevent theft) and boxes aren't waterproof (yay rainy season), the expected delay in receiving the luggage makes using a box less appealing.

    boxes

I will be starting this august, but i am married and my wife will be coming with me. We will be living off campus, so we had a decent amount of stuff to bring down. We just shipped 200 pounds of stuff inside two rubbermaid bins wth latching handles, then we wrapped the bins in plastic wrap (some stuff we got at a u-haul store). We shipped it via amerijet and it cost $250. Everything else is in our luggage, one suitcase and carry-on each
