    Cardiology residency for IMG's

    Advertisements

You know I've read alot about how hard it is to obtain cardiology as an IMG but the thing is IMG's and AMG's all go through the same pathway, Internal Medicine, and then complete a fellowship after. I think obtaining a fellowship in cardiology is more about what you do during your residency (i.e research) rather than where you went to medschool.

it depends a lot on where you do your residency, if there are spots in a fellowship program at the hospital you do your IM at, you have a greater chance of getting into that program if you've shined during your IM residency. The fellowship is more "who you know". Research helps yes, but the stigma of being a FMG still follows you into fellowship because we have a harder time getting even IM residencies at excellent hospitals with good cardio/GI/pulm, etc, etc fellowships.

The OP is partially correct. Your pedigree is very important for a Cards fellowship, so your school and board scores have some influence but not as much as your residency program and your accomplishments in residency.

it is probably helpful to do IM at an university affliated program to get into cardio rather than some local community IM program, which is easier for IMG/FMG to get

Yes... It almost goes without saying that a University IM program is crucial to securing a Cards or any other competitive fellowship... coming from a community program to fellowship would be tough even for a US grad.

it still matters that you are a foreign grad when applying to fellowships... even if you went to the best university program.

Its about who you know? Where you worked? Research? The top programs care about where you went to medical school (DUKE, HARVARD- of Carrib doesn't count), and the residency you did. Usually the best chances of getting into Cardio or specialty of any sort is where you did your residency.
    Almost there
