coming from Uk on medical elective..where should i stay?

    Advertisements

Hi guys, I'm a 4th year in Cardiff med school, UK, and have just organised a surgery elective in St George's through August '08. I was wondering if anyone could give me a heads-up on where I should look for accomodation, and any other useful info. Would be much appreciated. Cheers!

I am an incoming first termer but I was just curious as to why there would be a surgery elective on the Grenada campus - aren't clinicals in the US or UK?

When I was in St. Vincent for 5th and 6th term, I met a few med students at the hospital from the UK. I believe they come down to do rotations (electives) since St. Vincent was a former British colony. I believe the situation to be the case for the OP.

Yeh the elective is in Grenada General, guess you guys dont actually go there then ('not that primitive'..makes me nervous), but would be cool to get somewhere close to the campus just for student banter etc. Just dont wanna get set up in a dodgy area. Cheers for the info anyway.

Non-dodgy areas in my opinion are Lance Aux Epines, True Blue, and Grand Anse. They all have bus routes that go through them (though I am not sure if you'll have access to SGU since you won't be a student). Some hotels also offer short term housing for a reduced rate.

I would definitely stay in the Grand Anse area for your rotation, the other neighborhoods are remote and only really accessible by car or SGU bus system which you may not be able to use. Grand Anse has lots of rental situations, is located near a couple of beaches (Grand Anse and Hidden Beach) and has shopping and restaurants. It's also where most of the tourists stay so it's not just SGU students all the time. As for finding a particular place to stay, I'm not sure I can help but perhaps you could try to get a hold of the SGU student housing guide which lists "approved" landlords and properties. Then just start calling around...make sure to ask prospective landlords a lot of detailed questions.

    hospital

The hospital is pretty cool, it is set up with wards as opposed to private or semi-private rooms. The nice thing about surgery elective here is you will probably be able to do A LOT. the rules are pretty relaxed in grenada about what a student can and can't do.

5th and 6th termers do rotate in the hospital now, but it is very limited, not like regular clinicals (2-3 hours once per week).

The last time i was in the OR, 2 surgeons were german, one was cuban, the surg onc was grenadian (i think), and the anesthesiologist was cuban. You'll get a good mix of people and see a fair amount of things.

Regarding where to stay, you may have a problem finding an apt that rents to students only because most students will be there by middle of august. It is a pretty good idea to see if you can get a decent rate for a month at one of the grand anse area hotels. might be a lot of fun, too.

Awsome, cheers for all that usefull info. Am hoping to get SGU access as I think its through the university that the elective is organised, sounds good anyway. That sounds cool about the surgery too, was hoping to do as much as possible, as you can imagine in the UK we dont get that much hands-on in surgery (too many ambulance chasers!). Looking forward to it!
