confused: MPH to MD & FOM to MD

    Advertisements

I'm graduating from undergraduate April 2009. I wasn't always pre med. I really sucked gradewise until now-I have a good grade trend which includes upper level classes like a year of biochemistry and genetics, etc.

Anyhow, I've heard much about SGU from this forum, two graduates I shadowed, and emails with SGU. I'm confident SGU will provide a good medical education, and am also interested in the GSP program.

I have come to the conclusion that I will do just about anything to get into medical school.

I am aware of SGU's FOM and MPH programs. I understand that admission to the FOM program is offered by SGU, and that students do not apply to it.

I was wondering if it is possible to apply ot the MD program and then because the applicant is "on the edge" be offered and MPH to MD option? Also, would it be safe to mention in our application (in particular, the personal statement) how we would be open to FOM to MD or MPH to MD?

IMHO, if you plan on practicing in the US, do the Grenada program and not GSP. They still haven't worked out the licensing issues with NJ and Cali (unless they can procure those approvals before you start). If they do not gain approval before you start, then, most likely, the approvals will not be retroactive and you may still have licensing issues later on in NJ and Cali. Grenada's program is approved in all 50 states.

Secondly, IMO, do not mention an interest in FOM or MPH at this point. Once they receive all your materials, they will let you know if they are considering you for either of those programs and then you can state your interest. Your essay should be very clear you are going for the spot in the medical program and why you think that you are qualified to be in that position. If they do offer you FOM, then take it over MPH. While I have an MPH, the FOM will prepare you for med and you will be very prepared when you start M1 with everyone else. You can get an MPH later, if you think it will be useful to you.

Admissions are less competitive if you apply early.

All the best with your application.
