    Internet stability problems

    Advertisements

I live off campus. We (the complex) share a C & W internet connection provided by management. However, the internet connection is extremely inconsistent. In other words, I sporadically lose connectivity trying to make a Skype call or take an online quiz and need to reconnect/authenticate after a mere 2 minutes of activity (or less).

I shared a connection with someone last term at a different apartment, and we had the exact same problem. The modem sporadic lost connectivity, and the Sx mimic what's currently going on at the new place.

Here's where it gets tough for me. Our management provides the internet "free," so long as we don't complain to him/her about it. I don't want to get my own modem, not only because of costs, but because I don't see how it will solve the problem of sporadic internet connectivity. Ultimately, I will contact our manager, but I want to narrow the problem down as much as possible before doing so, and for this, I can use some input.

Has anyone dealt with an internet problem like this before? If so, what was the solution?
What information do I need from the landlord if I were to act as his liaison and schedule a repair visit? His account name or number or what?
What else might I need that might be unforeseen?

Thx in advance. Sorry for the long post, but this problem is quite frustrating.

--Start technical stuff you don't really need to read--
In an effort to Dx the problem:
-- I ping the first hop (205.214.210.1) continuously. When it drops, I've found that my connection does too. I get the typical 'request timed out', but also get 'Reply from 192.168.1.1: Destination net unreachable' from the modem, seemingly indicating the modem dropped connection.
-- I've asked others to ping my first hop too, and they've found that it continuities to respond even while my connection has dropped (more evidence pointing to modem connectivity, not a router problem).
-- I've asked others to ping the modems external IP address, but I think the modem does not respond to ICMP requests. It gives the other user a "Request timed out" message, even when I have connectivity.

If you have any other tips or tricks to help illustrate what's going on, let me know.

--End technical stuff you don't really need to read--

I had that same problem and bought a D-link DSL modem (~$80) from the US and it solved the problem. It even doubled our internet speed as well. It could also be bad wiring in the building or too many people sharing a connection. I would talk to your landlord and tell him you hare having problems with it.

I bet it's the modem. It probably sux and/or there are a lot of people using it at the same time (the whole complex).

I'd hate to shell out $80US on my own with the mere hope that it'll fix the problem. I wish there was some kinda diagnostic test for the stupid thing to help rule-in and warrant its replacement. It would really be bad if it truly is the building's wiring, as you mentioned.

Thanks for the direction. I'm going to fry some chicken in your honor.
