Rasty and Tong's Excellent Guide to Term 1

    Advertisements

I am Rasty and my roommate Tong are both Term 1 medicine at SGU. In our conversations over the course of the term we have found ourselves saying over and over "I wish someone had told me that before". So our goal is to give you a PRACTICAL guide to life in Grenada and life at SGU. I will be very happy to answer all your questions (maybe not all the same day but answer them all) so that you may have an easy transition to the island. I will stage my advice so that you aren't overwhelmed. It is not too early to start your packing strategy. Plan on 3 bags total. A laptop bag, a carry on and a huge checked bag. I am Canadian but flew Delta out of the states and paid $25 for over weight. Liat charged me $20 for the overweight. Paying $45 total for 20 lbs of stuff really is a good deal. Things here are ridiculous expensive so even if you bring 10 bottle of shampoo you will easily save the money. One thing that is confusing to many is that you get ONLY 50 lbs of checked luggage. Not 50 lbs per bag. THIS IS KEY: PLAN ON ARRIVING WITHOUT YOUR CHECKED BAG. Yes please reread that and let it sink in. What I am saying is make plans so that you can live out of your carryon for a couple days. Unless you are flying a major carrier into the island there is a really good chance you will get here without your carryon. Pack your carryon accordingly. Anyways enough for now and I welcome your questions.

    Ok,

    1) Do you need to bring additional lamps, or is there enuf lighting in the dorm rooms?

    2) I know I should check it out myself (and I will), but I'm flying on Air Jamaica all the way.....and I thought it was 50 lbs per bags, but I'm not sure......is it?

That's it for now........I'll def ask more as they come

    Rasty and Tong...Interesting names!

I will be flying Jamaica and I hope their service is better than delta.

Here is my question..Do you and your roommate have enough closet space? And, should I even bother to bring winter coats with me?

Wow, I like your enthusiasm. I went to dinner with a bunch of people and asked them and they said that the luggage differs with carrier but we know for sure that LIAT only allows 50lbs total of checked luggage. Honestly LIAT is crap but they are cheap. Google Liat customer service when you want a laugh. Sorry to disappoint but Air jamaica loses a lot of luggage also. Not to start a sex war but usually women get colder than men so some girls either bring a small fleece blanket or hoodie or sweater to lecture. I have a hoodie that I wear in the dorm room sometimes but as of now the AC can only get the temp to about 75. I have worn long pants one time since I have been here. I am from Canada but shorts and flipflops seem to be the theme.

FOOD: Tong and I cook. The reason is twofold. We can cook something fast here in the room. We borrowed all our money and the food on campus is high. So we figure that the more we spend the more with interest we will have to pay back. We can get out of lab run back to the room and make grilled cheese or tuna wraps or hot dogs in 20 minutes and then be ontime for lecture. I will check on Vegetarian food/dishes. The IGA grocery store is pretty Canadianized and you can get most of the stuff you can get at home minus the seal meat.

Lighting: Lighting in the dorm room seems to be sufficient.

Luggage: I would seriously call your carrier before they get your money and ask them what the baggage procedure is and what you can do to ensure you get your bag when you get here. One way is to either fly direct here or fly to Sanjuan and then American Eagle to the island. There are only a few major carriers that come here so it is not like you can pick whomever you want. Tong and I are compiling a necessary items list and will post it soon. Congrats on getting in.
