fly direct from LAX to JFK and direct from JFK to GND. that's the fastest. As for the cheapest, i don't think anything is going to be cheap flying from Cali.

I'm from california too, and your options are as follows:

    1. LAX-SJU-GND this route is probably the easiest as you may be able to get the direct flight from LAX to SJU via AA (7 hour overnight) and if you're lucky you can get AA direct from SJU to GND. AA is your best option because you can take 70lbs total of checked in luggage and a carry on plus your backpack. However, if you take Liat from SJU, you are only allowed one 50lb check in with a carry on and your backpack. If you have an extra bag they will charge you $50 US per bag and you are not guaranteed to get your bags on your flight. Make sure to have some toiletries and extra clothing in your carry on!

    2. LAX-BGI-GND again AA and other US airlines fly to barbados and you would have to get Liat from barbados to GND. again there are luggage restrictions. Liat does have e-ticketing which is convenient and their website is liatairline.com
** one thing i hate about barbados airport is you have to go through immigration and pick up your bags and re-check them at the airline counter and they don't have luggage carts!!! everytime i've gone through the porters with their luggage carts are gone! it can get frustrating if you have three bags to drag!

    3. LAX-JFK-GND this flight did not work as you would most probably have to spend the night at the airport to catch your connection either to GND or when heading back to LAX. I wouldn't suggest this if you're flying from LAX.

    4. Air jamaica via Montego Bay. Last time i fly this, you had to overnight in kingston. don't know if it has changed.

your best bet, fly via puerto rico - try to get AA all the way.

expect to pay anything between $800-1100 rt. however, i've been lucky enough to catch a flight home during the term for 10 days rt to LAX for as cheap as $500!

I have taken liat from BGI to GND a few times and have had two checked in bags at 50lbs each plus a carry-on weighing 30lbs and a back pack, and they didn't charge me anything. I guess it depends on how full the flight is and who the people at the ticketing booth are. that sucks that you had to pay. I flew american once it was over the summer and instead of a suitcase i had a box and they wouldn't take the box. they said the don't take boxes to the caribbean over the summer.. so that really sucked. best thing is to get to the airport as early as possible, if you're one of the first to check in they don't really care about the weight as much.. at least that's my theory and it's been working for me.

quick question RussianJoo...did you happen to travel with Liat at the beginning of this term? just wondering because they charged me extra for my second check in from san juan, maybe that's not the case from barbados - which would be great for next term's travel.

I did, I went through antigua this time and they didn't charge me anything. but I remember going through barbados and san juan with liat before and not getting charged as well.. Maybe their policies have changed recently? But the only time I have been charged extra was coming down to GND when both of my bags were over 50lbs close to 70lbs each.

how much extra do they charge for overweight baggage? Is it enough to just pay extra and take AA all the way from Cali to GND, or is it better to take AA to san juan and then just take Liat?

The policy did change only just recently, they limit the baggage to 50lbs now, but I am surprised that you were not charged
    Peace out

I was charged $50, this was in the US. I am not from cali I am from NJ so I was charged $50 for the over weight bags at Newark Airport. but then wasn't charged anything when i was switching planes to a smaller plane. In fact I have always had a least 2 checked bags coming down and was never charged by the smaller airlines like Liat or Carib Sun.

I guess I am either lucky or the ticket ladies just like me...

If you're meaning the St. George's University, there are some things you should know before packing your things and going there. All students are expected to arrive in Grenada on time in order to take part in the Mandatory Orientation Program on Wednesday before your first classes. To find a necessary route to Grenada, you can use the services of any Internet-based company or travel agency. When you're searching for flights, make sure you didn't forget about the airport code GND for Grenada's international airport.
