    Housing Process

    Advertisements

    Hello everyone, first time poster.

I have been looking into the housing process at SGU and am extremely confused to say the least. I have a few questions about it and am sorry if they have been answered before. So:

    1. What are the odds of staying on campus? It seems really hard to for both years since you have to go in a lottery each time...

    2. Why do we have to stay on campus for the first term with the possibility of not having housing the second term?--Does the school have a good housing guide for people who are not selected during the lottery.

    3. I have been spoiled during college, etc by always having my own bathroom..lol, I know. But, after first term, if we are to stay on campus, how hard is it to get a room with your own bathroom? I don't care about sharing kitchen, living areas, etc, just like my own bathroom

    4. When you do live with people and are sharing facilities, how early are you waking up for class?

    Thanks

    1. the odd depends on how many people put themselves into the lottery.
    2. yes, there are many new pff campus housing that are very close to campus. as a general rule, the closer it is to campus, the more expennsive it will be
    3. sgu has been building more of the single rooms style dorm on campus. however the true single with its own bathroom are very limited. i would say in total about 110 rooms for both male and female, so divide that by 2 and it is about 55 rooms for each gender/lottery. but there are many many more 3 single bedroom suite with a share bathroom and kitchen,
    4. depends on your schedule

I don't know why they require you to live on campus first term (perhaps to promote better study habits or perhaps to make more money) but it's relatively easy to get out of if you really want to. You just have to tell them that you have a good reason (pet or spouse etc) to live off campus.

There are a number of buildings that have en suite bathrooms per room but there is a lot of competition for them.

As for what time you get up in the morning - it really depends on your roomie situation - if you both have the same schedule for antomy and histology labs then of course there might be some juggling to make sure you can both shower when you want. I lived in the superdorm my first term and I hated it with all my being. But then at the end of the term I got myself a single in the superdorm and it was much much better.

Thanks for the great info dunsoon and jaywalk. If I do end up at SGU, I guess I will just have to deal with the fact that I don't get my own bathroom and might have to kicked outta my room hehe. Other than housing and few random things here and there, SGU is looking more and more appealing to me.

probably money, but also so its one less thing you have to worry about- after all, unless you pay a visit to the island before you start(which i highly recommend!!) you have no idea where to live, who the bad landlords are, etc.

I believe as a 1st termer you are SOL here. The SD (where 1st termers are housed) are double with a shared bathroom. Some of the newer SDs are 3 and 4 person suites where you still share a bathroom. There are only a few truly singles and suites with single bathrooms and usually go to upper termers. You may be able to get on the wait list for singles and some times - you may get off the list in a few weeks.

Once again, thanks for the input Rokshana. I really just want a place where my bathroom situation is ok lol. I knew I should have stayed in the dorms in Ugrad to get used to this hehe. I guess, it all comes down to the luck of the draw.

What percentage of students live Off campus after term 1 and are there any places to live that are walking distance?

there are a lot of new appartment buildings that just recently got build or will get build by the time you get here. so there will be plenty of places to live off campus but with in a 5-10min walk off campus. but with SD4 open it's really easy to get on campus housing as long as you don't mind living with 2 other people. It's a little tight with 3 people the place isn't that huge but you get your own room and there's internet. there's not too much place to store stuff. but it's one of the few places that has internet and it's really easy to get. They have had a lot of open rooms ever since SD4 opened up. So even if you don't win the lottery just put your name on the waiting list and you'll get on campus housing... I have been on campus since 1st term, and I have only won the lottery once.

But i think like 30% or at most 40% of the class lives off campus. but most 80% of the vet students live off campus. Now maybe less cause of SD4. It's tough to say exactly. You can probably call the housing office and they would tell you. or the school. They should know or be able to figure it out.

What are the chances of being able to stay on campus for the married housing? I mean are there a lot of married people who want to stay on campus or is it pretty easy to win the lottery for them and be able to stay on campus for the entire 2 years?

and a little side question: does anybody know if the married rooms have wireless internet now, or ethernet port? I haven't seen any update for them on the school website.

    Thanks,
    NasW
