i'd really love to hear advice from third and second termers on how to survive this class. i guess it's a little unnerving when the prof writes the exam and disappears without a trace a week before the final. not to mention the neckbreaking two week pace (i'm still trying to figure out what hit me )

    thanks guys.

from what i understand, u guys have a new prof, so i'm pretty sure you're not gonna be able to get any help from those that have passed through already, unless this guy has taught here before.

and i think u mean 3rd and 4th termers. i doubt any current 2nd termer will know what to expect for the gentics.
but as said before, its a new prof, but then again every genetic prof is basically a new prof anyway. my advice is just do as many Qs as possible from old exams to giv urself a feel of what type of Qs can be asked in genetics. boost your own confidence, walk in and do the best you can.

Yeah, we all basically seem to have a new prof. When I did Genetics we had a different prof from the term above us as well.

It does depend. Apparently about half the class in the term above me failed (because of the test not being appropriate to what was taught) and they had to scale the crap out of it.

But I agree that it's not a difficult class.

I think you are referring to the term I took it (Jan 2005). It was a horrible exam, but the class ended up getting curved a lot (went from failing by 3 points to getting a B) so not that many failed in the end (I think ~10 had to re-take the exam).

for a while they had two profs rotating one was a women teaching in the Jan Class (the one that 50% failed) the other a man that was supposedly a lot easier than the women. Then that same man taught for a few terms straight and then got fed up with the attitude of the students at this school and left.
So this term you should have a new person teaching. the exams should be straight forward from the notes. I would have to say most if not all the exams at this school are from the notes. If you know the notes well you will do well on the exam. Use the text book to do extra questions, there's a website that comes with the book that has a lot of questions online. you need the code that comes with the book and only one person can log in at once. If you're really paranoid about this class (which you shouldn't be) just study the notes and do the online questions and the Macdaddy old exams and you will do very well. If the prof decides to give you some questions that weren't covered in class they will get thrown out or the exam will be curved.

wow, a lot of responses... thanks for the advice guys. yes, i did mean third and fourth termers (i wrote the original post at 2 am over population genetics and i think i was delirious). it was a new prof from the uk this term with a lot of letters (degrees) after his name and he disliked us from day one i think (so the revolving door of genetics continues).
