    Is SGU really worth it???

    Advertisements

    Hey everyone

I am trying to decide between DO, SGU, and AUC. My questions are for those who actually do go to SGU.

Are you happy with the the school in general?
Do you feel that the basic science education is, overall, sufficient?
    How about clinical education?

After having experienced SGU, are you happy with your decision of going there considering the high costs and hardships that come with attending a foreign medical school? (in other words, would u decide to go to SGU after having experienced the school)

Lastly, what is the best thing about SGU, and what is the worst (try to be serious if possible?

    Thanksss!!!

as always with this question, i suggest consider the following to help you answer the question that is best for you:

consider the usmle pass rates for the offshore schools (for Do's consider the complex pass rate and usmle pass rate if you want to take those exams/residencies) Consider the percent who make it to their boards WITh their class (ie dont fail or decel) and consider the residencies you'll likely want and see how people do from that school. for relatively easy to obtain residencies, why spend more money if a less expensive school places just as well there? Consider if oyu can be licened in the states youre likely to be interested in from said school. finally, then consider lifestyle (location, cost etc) once these things are addressed. good luck.
as for me, i was very happy with sgu.

Yes. The school has its quirks but in the end, it helps you get that MD.

Yes, look at the USMLE pass rates. Even then, it all depends on your own study habits and accord. Study hard yourself, and the basic science years will reap its rewards.

The clinical aspect during the basic science years seems pretty strong as the school emphasizes a lot of history taking and physical diagnosis, more so on the history taking. During the clinical years, we are trained at the same hospitals many US students are trained. Take what you will from that.

Yes. The time in Grenada is short (1.5 yrs); the time in St. Vincent's is shorter (0.5 yrs); and the school gets us that MD with most of us getting into residencies in the states.

At the risk of sounding redundant, the best thing is that the school does get us an MD and legitimately places us into residencies in the states, including some very competitive and respected residencies. The worst is that the school gives us a very good glimpse of the red tape and administrative headaches that we're bound to encounter in equally cost-driven hospitals once we're out in practice.
