    Fin Aid Confusion HELP PLEASE.

    Advertisements

I am trying to drag my feet through this Finanail Aid Process and find it very disorganized. I have a call into Bayshore but wanted to get some feedback here.

    1) Get this Fin Aid Packet in the mail (have filled it out and am sending it in)
-followed all instructions, did my Master Promisary Note (MPN)
-selected "other" bank and put in Key Bank Lender Code
-ok so what, I guess the MPN is for Federal Loans.
    - Now do I mail this MPN to bayshore

2)Then post about new Grad PLUS loans and to hold off on old way of doing things until new way is implemented. Better loans, easier qualifications, blah blah blah. I guess this is talking about private loans.

3)So I went to fill out the Grad Plus Loan on Sallie Mae website, choose NY and St George Medical Appeared on list and selected it. Then I filled out online app. Now my question is since St George is on the list can I assume they are in the application loop or do I have to let them know I applied.

I never went through this during grad school. Fill out FAFSA signed an award letter and thats it. What do they do down at bayshore.

HELP ME.....Does this seem right or am I on a wild goose chase here.

    Thanks

So Much Stress From A Little Paperwork?

You should really be calling Bayshore with these questions, not asking them on a public forum. Loan matters are P&C, even the process of completing required paperwork. Just dial the main number and ask for Financial Aid, or use the extensions provided in your packet. You will go though this every loan period so its better to get used to the process early. Financial Aid actually makes it easy for you on the islands by provided a free phone to call their office (a direct line).

Just because the process is different from graduate school doesn't make it bad. Loan products, programs, and terms vary. There are products developed especially for medical students for which you qualify. You would not know about these until now. Have patience and the funding will fall into place.

    Good luck.

Trust me...Its disorganized...I know how med loans work b/c well I was a med student and the process was so transparent.

Prob b/c it is foriegn med school i guess.

The process of completing paper work should def be public not private. How would discrepencies be solved. Just thought I would get some fast feedback from other here since it was late at night. I figured it out

The packet I received is just seems scatter and somthing my little cousin could throw togther(no carbon copies, healthcare sheet thrown in there that is suppose to go to a different address just to name a few)

I am not stressed out, just confused.

I did read everything is going to be processed online starting July 1 so that should make things better and that student will be able to manage, view all loans online.

If you go with a lender other than ed-invest (SGU's preferred co.) then your lender mails your MPN to Bayshore for certification and Bayshore mails it back to the lender. Continuosly follow up with both bayshore and the lender you've chosen. I went with BoA and was on the phone every other day with both parties, acting as a go-between. Nothing would have been done had I not done this. Like you said, they're very disorganized.

Thank you so much...Thats what I wanted to know if I should be proactive about this now or think sending in those Fin Aid papers into the Black hole and everything would turn out ok.

    Much Appreciated

I while get on Bayshore now. I just hate when they seem like you are annoying them

    Some news from BAyshore....

Even though Grad PLUS Loans for students are in the works. They still have not gotten offical word from Dept of Ed yet. So it looks one semester of Ed Invest before switching over to better, new, Grad Plus Loans

So many rumors not enough fly swatters

You are not getting a good start Gforce. Already criticizing and you haven't even spent one day on the SGU campus as a student yet.

I, on the other hand, am graduating in June and have been through the whole financial process many times. So I'm not sure what I, as a participant of this forum, should be trusting you about.

The problems you needed such urgent HELP for were easily solved. It's fine if you want help or advice, but please keep your conclusions about "foreign schools" to yourself. Really!

Not even taking the bait on this and will stick with facts as I have experienced

What I am thinking now in slow mo:
    --> --> --> --> --> -->

    School #1 - AA - No Fin Aid problems - Location 1- Country -1 - 20+ Service years
    School #2 - **/MS - No Fin Aid problems - Location 2- Country -1 - 20+ Service years
    School #3 - MS - No Fin Aid problems - Location 3- Country -1 - 20+ Service years
    School #4 - MD - Confusing/but managable- Location 4- Country -2 - 20+ Service years

Differential = diff country --> Fin aid confusion (two locations, distance may be the issue) not my problem

Did speak with Bayshore and they all but confirmed many changing things, rumors, things in the pipline so just trying to learn my role in the process and it seems to be:

Be proactive, a sqeeky wheel but be to the point and professional about it and you will get your answer.

If I never called I would have never known that I was suppose to be doing certain things vs waiting for "some" direction.

Congrats on graduation. Your my hero

    Confusion

Don't worry G - I found the process confusing as well and in fact, found various aspects of it confusing throughout the four years I was there and yes, I am graduating in June as well. I guess some of us are not as savvy as others.

And yes, I agree, it's because it's a foreign school - there is nothing pejorative in this statement. It's because if it was a US school, we would only be using US government loans which are very simple to apply for. The added private loans complicates the matters a little bit and double the paperwork and tracking.

However, the financial aid office is generally on the ball and although they can be abrupt and sometimes not verbally very helpful, they manage to get things taken care of. Just ignore the rumors and for now do the EIC loan (or whatever one you arrange for yourself) plus Stafford.

Good questions. I'm supposed to have some sort of financial aid "orientation" on the phone next week... I've also sent the paperwork in but I have no idea about the status of my financial aid. I'll see if I can get some answers and I'll be sure to post them if they are helpful. For now, calling Bayshore and covering all your bases with them is probably the best thing to do.
