Clinical training partnership with Ponce Health Sciences University

The Medical School and the Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) have announced a clinical training partnership, allows students from the St George’s, University of London medical programme at the University of Nicosia to complete the final two years of their degree at ACGME-approved hospitals in the US territory of Puerto Rico.

This development is the first outcome of a broad agreement signed last month between the Medical School and PHSU to promote academic cooperation and research collaboration between the two institutions.

PHSU works with ACGME-approved hospitals including Hospital Damas, Hospital Episcopal San Lucas Ponce, La Concepcion Hospital, Mayaguez Medical Center, Bella Vista Hospital and PHSU’s Multi-Medical Clinic. Collectively, the ACGME-approved specialities include Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Family Medicine, Psychiatry and Surgery. Together, these hospitals employ over 3,500 professionals and have available over 1,000 beds.

PHSU joins the Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, USA, the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, Israel, and the Nicosia General Hospital in Cyprus as clinical training sites for the Medical School. Students from the St George’s,University of London medical programme at the University of Nicosia will begin clinical rotations at PHSU in August 2015.

Will even those students who cannot speak Spanish be able to complete their final two years at PHSU?

A knowledge of Spanish is recommended but not required as a significant number of patients speak English. All patient notes are in English, and the doctors training our students are of course fluent in English. Any language issues will be addressed through the use of interpreters: This is part of an existing policy that is in place to deal effectively with any potential barriers to student learning, and which has worked to good effect at our other sites. We are also looking at offering Spanish-language training with an emphasis on medical terminology.

Can you talk about anything else about the agreement between PHSU and St George’s, University of London medical programme at the University of Nicosia's collaboration? Is there anything else that will be available to U of N students? And will PHSU students be coming to Cyprus or Israel?

    My pleasure of course.

Our Admissions staff in Chicago was informed that our students at Swedish Covenant Hospital (SCH) experience significant language barriers which SCH overcomes with a combination of on-site staff and phone interpreters. The neighborhood where SCH is located has many new immigrants resulting in 80+ languages spoken there.

Since I lived in the same approximate neighborhood (about a half mile away) both while I was studying and after I can attest to the accuracy of this statement.

Beginning in Cyprus, and experiencing the language barriers there, has been good preparation for clinical placement in SCH. I expect it will be good preparation for Puerto Rico as well.
