Our students in Cyprus now only have access to 6-8 weeks at our home hospital in London most likely as an elective rotation in year 4.

I have done a lot of research on this school making it one of my top choices. I don't see how students thought that they could go to UK for clinical years. In every source of information that I saw, there has never been a mention of UK being an option for clinical years. The options in Cypurs US and Sheba were all made very clear in my option. I have been satisfied with the amount of honesty and communication that this school maintains with its prospective students.

    I completely agree with krisdani.

When I applied two years ago, in my interview, I asked specifically about the UK and was told that I would be able to go to the UK for MY ELECTIVE in 4th year. After doing some research following my interview, it was blatantly obvious that we wouldn't be able to go to the UK for 3rd and 4th years due to regulations which cap the amount of medical students in the UK. NOTE: i found this out BEFORE i started back in 2011.

This information is out there and easily accessible. I'm also very satisfied with the amount of honesty given by the faculty here. They have only ever released official information of placement locations once they have finalised them.

I think that it is important to inform incoming and prospective students on what is currently going on at the university. In a meeting today we found of that there are currently only 25 spots open for clinical rotations in the united states. Selection is based on if you have a child in the united states and why you choose the place (i.e needing residency in that country- giving north americans priority) and then based on random allocation. More than 25 students are going to choose the U.S, so it will pretty much be random choice if you will get placed there. We currently have about 60 North americans, so everyone is pretty nervous about our last two years and fate with residency positions.

I don't want to post negatively on this board, but this is something I wish I knew before starting at Cyprus.

The following is from our Medical School’s administration:

Our new clinical training provider in Chicago, the Swedish Covenant Hospital (SCH), has a total of 50 slots. Furthermore, we are coordinating closely with SCH in an effort to create additional clinical capacity in the US. Our objective is to have sufficient clinical slots in the US to cater to the needs of all North American students as well as some students from other countries. That is certainly the case with students entering their final 2 years as of this summer. We have every expectation that we will secure the necessary slots to meet the demand from the current 1st year and future cohorts, and we will be announcing these developments as they are finalised over the next few months.

At the same time, as our US careers advisor pointed out at a student meeting, not only is it possible to secure a residency by splitting your 2 years of placements between the US and either Israel or Cyprus (where our other training hospitals are located), but this additional international exposure may even give you an advantage in the match.

Finally, the assertion that “selection is based on if you have a child in the United States” was taken out of context. That is an example of how exceptional circumstances may play a role in allocation but every effort is made to align clinical placement allocations with the student’s planned career.

    Floats your boat

Everybody should be aware however that the 50 spots in the US at Swedish Covenant Hospital (SCH) include both, 3rd and 4th year students.

You assume no further spots will become available with new affiliations already on progress. Your math may be temporarily correct.
