    Luton campus closed?

    Advertisements

I visited Luton campus twice on working days before applying for admission but the campus was closed on both occasions.

    Is the Luton campus functional?

The luton campus is still functional but on a limited basis due to the low enrollment in the UK campus at this time.

If you want to visit the campus, contact the campus first before going.

If you're coming from St Albans it isn't far but still a waste of a train ride if no one is there.

    Thanks for your response.
I work in Bedford so Luton is on my way.
I cannot understand why the college is closed on working days.
Even if the enrollment is low; the college should be open.
I cannot understand why not even a single soul was there on the working day and the college was closed?

If you check the SCIMD academic calendar:

    Academic Calendar

You'll notice that "Vacation" is listed as "Aug 23 - Sep 3, 2010".

During every vacation period the campus only has minimal staffing and availability. When I came to Luton I needed to call and let them know ahead of time and schedule a windows of time to meet since only a skeleton staff was available during the vacation period and they were rather busy preparing for the incoming semester.

Skeleton staffing and limited availability of most campuses, even in the US, during vacation periods is not unusual.

However, if the campus is not fully functional during usual college hours (so obviously not on weekends, after hours, and bank holidays) by Sept 9th (which would be the first full day of classes following the bank holiday), I'd be quite concerned and inquire further as to what is going on.

If I'm not mistaken, regular class attendance during the business week, which must be recorded by an employee of the college, is a requirement of the student visas issued by the UK Border Agency to SCIMD students. As such, the campus should be open and active for a reasonable period of time each day during the business week as a condition of the visas which the students hold, so you shouldn't have any trouble meeting with a member of the staff once everything is in full swing for the fall semester.

I went there on 26th July and again on 16th August.

On both these occasions no one was there.

If the holidays start on 23rd August (as you have mentioned) it's quite strange why no one was there on both these occasions.

It would have been nice if you'd actually included that bit of information in your original post. Sigh.

Did you leave any other pertinent information out, such as your "visits" taking place at 10PM at night, this all took place in 2008, etc...?

In case you didn't notice, according to the academic calendar, the 16th of August 2010 was the first day of final exams for the 3rd semester of this academic year. When I was there for final exams the campus did not maintain regular hours on those days since exams happen in blocks of time (usually earlier in the day) and regular classes are not in-session. Students typically clear out after their exams are over for that day in order to study for the next block of exams the following day. This is particularly likely given this was the first day of exams. The fact that no one was present whenever you visited on the 16th is not unusual depending on the exam schedule for that day.

What you are suggesting that everyone was there for the exam only on 16th August including the administration staff and faculty.

For me it's quite strange that no one was there in the working hours if the college was open for the exams.

    How about 26 July?

Probably you would say it was a sports day, or another exam day or some other event and that was the reason no one was there.
