no you don't have to pass step one to do clinicals in senegal. Its the United States Medical Licensing Exam... has nothing to do with any other country other than the US.

Passing step 1 is not a requirement to do rotations the vast majority of times in the US either. Several schools use step 1 as a requirement to start rotations since it is a way to stream top students into more coveted hospitals... plus its a motivating factor for students to actually do the exam.

Of all the hospitals that I did rotations in as a student (some FMG hot spots, some better places) there was only 1 that required step 1 for a core and a minimum score requirement as well and it was an FMG spot.

This may have changed since i did rotations but i know several students from various schools currently that have completed all their rotations without ever passing step 1.

its actualy a requirement at many US hospitals with US med students. It may or may not be at the community hospitals that have no med school affiliation but itrs a hospital requirement. actually US med students are allowed to start clinicals without step 1 but they must have taken it and if they fail they actually get pulled from the rotation and are not allowed toc ontinue until they pass. every hospital i rotated at required it, but i rotated at hospitals with US med schools directly attached to them or full affiliates alongside US med stduents

Things do change regularly with rotations. When i rotated most didn't care and I too rotated at large university with US students. I did well on my boards on my first try so it didn't matter really. The reason i know they didn't require a pass is because these hospitals were not affiliated with our school so i had to fill out the applications myself and do the legwork, so i knew the requirements then. That was a long time ago so i wouldn't doubt if things have changed.

The original question was about rotations in senegal and no step 1 is not a requirement. But it would be strongly reccomended if the final goal is licensure in the US. Personally i would recommend doing it as soon as you finish basic science because thats when that stuff is fresh.

i agree 100% with you. everyone should take steo 1 when ready as soon as besic sci is done because the material is so different for step 2 and beyond and the last thing you want to do is study biochem during rotations or after graduation
