    Question about 5th semester

    Advertisements

I am thinking about attending Spartans 5th trimester program in St Lucia for the upcoming September trimester, and had a few questions for current students and recent past. Being that I would be a new student entirely (transfering from SMU) I wanted to know how the review / fundamentals class is structured as well as what the work load for ICM is. Is there clinic / hospital rotation time? Will there be a shelf exam for ICM and is there a qualifyier that I would have to pass at the end of the semester indicating readyness for the boards (according to the website there is an exit exam - I wanted to know if it is in house, Kaplan, NBME etc...)? Is there a uniform that is required and if so that what is acceptable? Besides that any other information (class size, what the instructors expect as an incoming 5th semster student etc...) regarding 5th semester program is appreciated. I know that this is a loaded question and entails a lot of details and information, so any thing that you can share is much appreciated once again. Thanks in advance!

    5th trimester

Class structure: Ped 8 am to 9 am (not covered in Step I)
Review: System + Subject review from 9 am to noon. 5-10 minute break every hour. Most students do not attend the system/subject review sessions. They believe its more productive to study on your on. No class after noon.
No ICM or clinical rotations/observership. It was scheduled in 4th trimester.
NBME: 4 exams are scheduled during the semester. Average is calculated as your final grade. Thereís no single exit exam.
No uniform is required. Color shirt, pants (no jeans or shorts), and lab coast is required dress code for the school but nobody wears it. Most people wear t-shirt and pants. 5th should be more relaxed in term of strict enforcement of dress code. You can always wear scrubs but itís not necessary. Some people just wear t-shirt and shorts or even jeans. It doesnít really matter. Btw- do u think dress code is necessary?
Class size: less than 20. There always few transfer in 5th trimester.

Thanks Dermis. Your info sheds light into the 5th trimester program on the island. I probably will not be making it in Sep but will try for Jan. although I would really like to enter a schools 5th semester program who will NOT have me repeat 5th, especially on the rock as I have finished 5th entirely - just have not passed my boards. Thanks again!

    Alternative

If u have finished your 5th semester, you may want to look at other school. Spartan require u spend 1 semester on the rock before transferring into clinical. If other schools have this policy, u may look into other schools which offers 5th semester in the states. Good luck with your preparation for step I.
