    5th Semester Location

    Advertisements

I live in Chicago. I'm trying to decide between SJSM and Spartan.
Where do students go for the 5th semester?
I like the tuition fees and it appears that the cost of living and rent is reasonable.
Is housing difficult to find? how far are housing located from the school ?

Students currently complete the 5th trimester in St. Lucia.

The cost of living is very reasonable and housing is not difficult to find at all. There is plenty of housing available within walking distance of the school. For example it took me anywhere from 3-5 minutes to walk to school from my place. While I was there were some prof's living in the same development.

    Billing

Fifth Semester is $5K, then there's a clinical price drop- excepting paying for those clinicals specifically? I'm going to have to collate the information on these forums and do projected total costs averaged per semester to get an idea of who offers more education for the dollar. Unless some helpful person can point me toward a precompiled evaluation?

    5th trimester

Basic science tuitions are 5K and clinical science tuition is approximately 10K per semester ($3500 per semester - payable to school and $250-$450 per week to hospitals). Are they green-book hospitals? If you're comparing 2 schools, find out how weeks of clinical sciences are required to graduate. And, compare and contrast the lists of courses for 2 schools. For example: At Spartan, students take ob/gyn, surgery, and pediatrics as part of their curriculum. These are valuable courses but not covered in step I and it distracts students from focusing on relevant core subjects for step I.

Don't forget the benefits of going back to states for your 5th trimester; it's unnecessary to have 5th trimester on the rock.

The choice of hospitals are very limited with Spartan and their Chicago rotations are being set up through a third party agency. This may lead to issues with licensing depending on the state. They are now charging a flat rate of $10K a semester for the clinical part. The fifth semester review is not that helpful and most students I know end up taking several additional months to study and take additional prep courses when they return from the island. The rotations they have are green for some but they are not green for all the cores. The school is OK but don't expect much if you end up here.

The word out of Spartan is that there is going to be an option to do 5th semester in NY!! That means only 4 semesters on the island!

Info came straight from the dean of basic sciences. There will be ICM in a Hospital in Brooklyn as well as a review course. The tuition for this 5th semester is $9,750. The same as the cost of rotations. The current 4th trimester students are gonna be the gina pigs. Due to the increased costs, there will still be a 5th semester option on the island for $5,000.
