    More Spartan Residents

    Advertisements

I am posting links to some program websites where Spartan graduates are currently doing residency. They all seem to be university based programs.

    1.Tulane Family residency
    Residents

    2.UNV Surgery
University of Nevada School of Medicine - Post-Graduate Residency & Fellowships

    3.Michigan State Psychiatry
Residents | Michigan State University Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies

4.Pathology Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine
    Pathology - Residents

    5.Family Medicine Creighton university
Creighton University :: Medical School: Family Medicine

    6.Family residency Alabama
    Our Residents

    7.Psychiatry UNCH
    http://residency.palmettohealth.org/...hip.cfm?id=196

This is a time consuming process searching the web. But I think the school needs to put someone into researching the graduates and doing a better job of obtain accurate information from the outgoing classes. I posted these because they are all doing university based PG programs that are somewhat more competitive compared to community based institutions.

I think Spartan with the new management and NY approval is a great choice given its low costs attendance and the number of people who have already graduated and are now licensed. I also think Spartan should seriously consider moving the 5th semester to the states. This will give students and the school more options in terms of USMLE preparation and transition into the clinicals.

IMO Spartan has a lot of room for expansion and growth assuming the management remains vigilant about the school's future. But only time will tell. So far, the school appears promising and should not be overlooked by potential students.

    Crane,

Which states is Spartan banned from in terms of residency and/or full licensure? I know they were denied by the California state medical board.

    To answer your question.......

Spartan was disapproved by California. This means graduates cannot get licensure in CA and in States that follow the California list. Some people try to make a distinction between CA disapproved and not approved by CA. This is a distinction without a difference. The end result is the same: Not on the CA list, no permanent license. This would put Spartan in the same category as any other CA unapproved school: AUA, IAU, SMU, MUA and so on.

The only reason I am optimistic about Spartan is because the school under the new management has made marked improvements and seems to be on an upswing. I would not have recommended it nor would I have been optimistic about this school when the former management ran it. The former owner ran the school into the ground but managed to produce about 2000 licensed doctors. This is an important fact to keep in mind. The newer schools are still a work in progress and do not have the licensing track record of the more established schools. This was my point in the previous message.

I think there are several posts discussing this topic. The new management revamped the curriculum and the USMLE pass rate seems to be on the rise. I have no first-hand knowledge of the current pass rate. The school's new president is a heavy hitter in terms of medical education and USMLE. The fifth semester was added. They regained their NY approval, which I think was lost under the old management. They also regained their approved status with the GMC in UK, which was also lost under the old management.

However, asking some of the current students may be a better way of assessing the effectiveness of the newly implemented changes. I have been talking to current students directly using the PM function. Many of the current students donít participate on these forums but the responses I got by talking to some of them have been overwhelmingly positive.

Are you sure about this statement? NO difference between being in the disapproved list and being unapproved ???

What about Texas ? Is spartan listed in the list of schools whose degrees are not valid in Texas ?

What about states like Oregon, which does not follow CA list, but require that the school should not be disapproved by any other state ?

Dr. Kidd is correct, being on the disapproved list is much worse than those in the unapproved list because there are many states, including texas and oregon, that wont license you if your school has been disapproved by any other state.
