    5th semester

    Advertisements

Can someone explain the 5th semester to me please?
On the catalogue, the courses listed for 5th semester are:

    OB/GYN
    Essentials of Clinical Sciences
    Pediatrics
    Physical Diagnosis
    Introduction to Clinical Medicine II

Question: Shouldn't there be a USMLE Step 1 preparation class in the 5th semester?

    Thanks.

Akara-Ogun & IAUPREMED: Regarding your question - I will try to get a more detailed explanation of the fifth trimester, but honestly it is Christmas and I will not speak to anyone until after the new year. Like I said before try reading over all the information on the website and/or contacting the School.

In the mean time ... the info (below) should give you a better understanding of the set-up (as far as its being organ system review and expanded basic-clinical sciences interrelationships). The new management implemented lots of positive additions to the faculty and curriculum. The changes they have made in the school are all geared at improving student preparation and performance. I really believe that the efforts they are putting forth regarding medical education and USMLE preparation will be more than sufficient for current and future students.

New York was great news. The new management is serious about taking the school forward in the most positive ways. This was the first of a several accomplishments the school is seeking. Looking at the seriousness of the new management and their dedication to updating the schools curriculum, California (I would imagine) is the next logical step. The fact that the curriculum was updated so swiftly, to better match that of US schools, is a main reason NY approval came through (IMO). These goals are important to note (again IMO) as evidence of the changes and curriculum additions. These changes can only assist you in USMLE preparation and Clinicals preparation.

The website states the following, regarding the fifth:

"The inclusion of a fifth trimester with an organ-system review and expansion of the basic-clinical sciences interrelationships will better prepare our students for their clinical experiences and U.S.M.L.E. examinations."

The addition of the organ system review should be really helpful for USMLE prep. The school has retained USMLE experts to help prepare students for the exam. From what I understand they are all experts in their field(s) related to USMLE prep. By bringing in these experts the students should be very well situated for not only the USMLE but for the transition into the clinicals portion of the program. As I have stated I am off of the island, so hopefully some students on the island may chime in and post useful information.

I hope this information is helpful. Feel free to ask any other questions you like (also feel free to PM me if you want).
