I dont know much about the other schools but for a start spartan is the oldest and has more practising physicians than the rest so I would rank spartan #1 .But choosing a school is a personal choice and different schools work for different people, so it all depends on what you are looking for .

I think you can find a difference of opinion on rankings. It all depends who responds and who does not. If you get responses from SHSU students you will likely find SHSU at the top of the list while if you get responses from students from the other schools you will get different responses.

I attend SHSU so my opinion is obviously biased. But I will tell you what drew me to the school and why I recomend it to others. (list not in any particular order just as thoughts come to mind)

    1. It is one of the oldest carib medical schools. I am fairly sure the others you listed are fairly new.
    2. SHSU has stuck to its core principals of keeping tuition as low as possible
    3. SHSU has small classes - intentionally
    4. great prof: student ratio
    5. Good Clinical locations in the US - Chicago, Maryland, NY, Florida
    6. Joining SHSU is kind of like becoming part of a family - due to the small size
    7. Good prof's with lots of availability (for example - while on the island I was always able to get clarification when needed on weeknights and weekends if needed. My prof's were available to me at almost any time)

One University may appeal to you more than another but if the above things are important to you then I definitely recomend SHSU to you. It is a great school that will prepare you for your USMLE exams, your rotations and turn you into a great physician (so long as you work hard - as in any university). I suggest you explore the threads for those other institutions if you want more information. If you have any other questions regarding SHSU feel free to ask. You can even PM me if you want.

Spartan is still banned in CA...the others are not. And most of the Spartan grads came in the 80-90's....

While SHSU is banned in Cali there are redeeming factors. Most notably that the school has been in operation longer than the other schools put together. While this alone does not indicate a better education the article you posted also in no way differentiates the level of education and training you receive at SHSU from the other schools.

I personally felt it was superior to these other institutions (of which I was accepted to all), but that was based on personal preference and opinion. I opted for a smaller classroom setting with a higher prof. to student ratio than others (which is why I also turned down the larger more well known institutions not listed in this discussion). While I am not sure if students from those other schools can in fact attain a residency or license in cali (I am not aware of their standing), it is important to note that these other schools, although not banned, are not approved. Medical school candidates should research the schools they are applying to and take into consideration where they want to practice medicine, what they are looking for in a school, the amount they can afford (if the schools they are applying to are having loan issues). In cali SHSU graduates can practice medicine in federal facilities as can any of these other schools (as far as I am aware). In the end, students should make their decisions based on information, the direction the school is headed, the material covered, the design of the curriculum and of course where want to practice medicine.

I think it was banned by Cali because of poor decisions made by the former management (including a lawsuit)...if a similar review is made with Xavier and Windsor now, these schools will be banned, including their technical schools. Spartan is not out of the woods yet but their students are doing better with board scores and have a higher residency match rate than the other second/third tier schools.
