Residency in NY for Spartan Grads ???

I am posting this thread to explore the possibility of doing residency in the state of NY after graduating from Spartan. My understanding based on research is that Spartan graduates are not elligible for residency as the school is not approved by the NY State Department of Education.

Following is a direct excerpt from the website of Winthrop Hospital Graduate Medical Education page: http://www.winthrop.org/departments/education/gme/ap.cfm

New York State Department of Health regulations limit non-LCME accredited international medical school graduates from participating in New York State residency programs if their training has included more than 12 weeks of clinical clerkships outside of the country in which the medical school is located unless the NYS Education Department has approved the school. A current list of the approved medical schools can be found at the NYSED website:

I would also like you to read the following directive published by the New York Dept of Health to all Residency Program Directors. Pay close attention to information on Page 3 http://www.gnyha.org/4707/File.aspx

Spartan, like most other caribbean schools offer clinical rotations in the US (which is definitely more than 12 weeks outside St Lucia). And for sure doesnt offer any in St. Lucia. So how is it that spartan grads could do residency traning in NY ?

Some of the pro-Spartan posters state that they have contacted the state board and that several of their gradutes have completed residency training in the State of New York. I would like to know how they circumvented this restriction. Can any one of those graduates second this claim ? Can any pro-spartans post a link where readers can verify the claim that spartan graduates can or have done residency in NY ?

You will be classified as a graduate of Ross and not Spartan. And since Ross is accredited by NY State Dept of Education, you are elligible to apply for any residency position in NY.

My strategy was to do the basic sci at spartan since i already wasted my money at dental school. I choose Ross for clinicals because of the obvious ( 50 state clinical rotation)

    to bestman

Sorry man, but the 50 state accreditation will not apply to you since you've done your basic sciences at Spartan. You're fine for New York though. In any event, being a grad of Ross is a plus. Good luck.

True. However, Only California requires you to have completed all classes (including basic sciences) at an approved school in-order to be a licensed in CA. So being a Ross graudate bestman should still be able to get licensed in ALL states except California.

does anyone know if you can do more than 12 weeks in a VA hospital in New York and then do resedency in New York???????
I do know the 12 week rule for NY hospitals but I was told that the VA hospitals in NY do not consider the 12 week rule and you can do everything at the VA hospital
