the ranking is posted at the cross streets of delusions and grandeur...lol

he has a lot of work ahead..doable though because spartan has a track record and had federal aid and cali...i wonder if they can get federal aid back? that would go a looooonbg way to jump them past smu aua and so on...

also a md backer from the US may not be the answer to all hopes...mua belize was bought by a us big shot and now there are windows boarded up and anatomy lab has bodies left in it a year later

It would/will take a lot, but if they can get NY, CA and staffords, they may be able to pass Saba. To reach the big three would take a lot more effort and money. Overall, its the best news for their students and I'm happy for them. You never know, miracles sometimes happen. -s&a

S&A - I understand that the immediate goal is NY and possibly private loans. I think it will take a little more time to get Federal money back. As for cali, I think it is several years off into the future and I agree that it will take a lot of money and effort (to accomplish many things). The new owner seems very optimistic and serious about getting the school to where it should (already) be. Hopefully things will happen quickly but from what I understand *fast* for NY is *slow* for the rest of the world. Hopefully something will happen within the next year. Time will tell. As for being among the *big 3* ... it will take a butt-load of money and definitely more than a couple of years (my guess would be around 5 assuming things go absolutely perfect... which all of us in reality know they don't always). Schools such as AUC for example have deep pockets and a student body larger than SHSU and I imagine a very giving alumni association. It will certanly take more than a year to move up, it will take several years and a constant flux of money into the school. I think the school is looking to get NY asap loans asap and then slow it down a bit to recover. I don't think it will take a miracle, just some common sense (money-wise) and some time. Hopefully withing two years the topics will say "SHSU has NY and they are going for cali"... but like I said before time will tell...

this pretty much ranks up there with the SMU "affiliation with harvard" circa 2004-5 (fyi it isnt; some of their teachers took a harvard course on teaching. Nice, but not the "link" with harvard some students were trying to promote it as ). Or the assertion that schools with rotations in the UK put you at a severe disadvantage for residency (famously and laughably asserted here around the same period, by a user hoping to convince premeds that places like SGU and Ross were inferior choices. Yes, in an admitted desire to see their own school promoted, they were happy to tell naive students this.) Basically, this is an unsupported assertion that relies on prospectives not understanding what the connection really means. i.e., not a hell of a lot. That's not a comment on the school, merely how important this new factoid should be weighed in your selection process. That is, not at all.

    specialknyc,

I agree with you. Lets just hope that it doesn't take too long. The great thing about it is that the owner is the Chairman of a surgical dept in NY. So I am sure that they will do everything humanly possible to get NY ASAP. Unfortunetly, "ASAP" in NY may take a year or two.

I didn't realize that Spartan also lost their private loans, for some of us old timers, we remember fed loans. This is really sad. Losing those private loans is an indication of how bad things must have gotten.

Still I can't think of better news for this school than it being sold. So much damage has happened over the past years. They not only damaged themselves, they damaged the reputation of all off-shore schools. If they get their act together it will be good for everyone.

Although, I think that competition is good and it will give students more options, it would be really nice if all the off-shore schools also formed an alliance to combat restrictions and discrimination against off-shore students and grads.

Spartan being sold off may appear as one small step but it will be a gaint leap for Spartan and the rest of the Caribbean. In time we will see the fruits of this purchase. St. Lucia is really a great place to learn medicine, in comparison to other off-shore places.

I agree that to get anywhere near the scope of the big 3, it will take a lot of cash and time, infrastructure. Its a shame because considering that this is one of the first carib medical schools, Spartan should be one of the "big 4" but its not and it may never be. -s&a

I do not agree with your statement "They not only damaged themselves,
they damaged the reputation of all off-shore schools." I see no correlation between SHSU and the failed attempts of diploma mills that have popped up form time to time. In my opinion places such as those are what damaged caribbean schools.

I am no certain but I do think there is some form of alliance. However to my knowledge that alliance has nothing to do with attempts at combating ridiculous restrictions (which seem to be) based on the location of a medical school.
