    Clinical Shelf Exams

    Advertisements

Anyone else hate the system we currently have? They should really consider providing these shelf exams at more than one time since not everyone's rotation schedule coincides with the typical semester start and end dates.

For instance, my IM shelf will be available 6 weeks into my surgery rotation, and then I'll have to wait around for 2 months after the end of surgery to take the surgery shelf.

I hope this means less prep time for CK.

I agree. Nothing will be done posting it here though. Try posting it on SMU official forum

totally agree, only days I ever misses on rotation were when I had to travel to Rockford, Illinos to take shelf exams. Its a huge inconveinence especially when you are not in the city in which the exam is administered.

Would you have considered taking more than one shelf in a given day? I'm trying to see which way may work best.

A lot of students take multiple shelf exams at one sitting. You almost have to.

These shelf exams are costly. For one, you will likely have to miss at least a few days of learning during your rotation. You will have to take them while you have long forgotten the most important stuff. You will have to travel. This is expensive--airfare, hotel, rental car, food, etc. Plus, you can only take 2 at one time. You get nothing but a score back--no feedback whatsoever. Not a fan.

I have heard of people being stuck in a predicament where the only thing left for them do graduate is to sit for their shelf exams. It seems like the best way to avoid this is to miss some days of a rotation in order to take the shelfs. Anyone have to struggle through this?

I'm having issues right now because i have interviews booked through December, which is when the shelf exams are offered. I booked the interviews way before the shelf dates were released. I think I'll end up taking 2 shelf exams right before I graduate unless I can figure something to do.

Yes inded I took multiple shelf exams on 2 separate occasions, also was able to take psych shelf exam before my rotation was finished. So I believe I took the five shelf exam at 3 separate sittings. Took IM and Surgery together (not ideal but thats the way it worked out) OB, and then PEDS and Psych together on the same day. If you must take two in one day I feel it is best to incorportate psych into that day becasue that is by far the easiest shelf.

surgery and psych this Thurs in Chicago. Can't afford flight, hotel, food, rental car, to miss any days on my current rotation, etc, so I am driving 6 hrs, sleeping in the car, taking these 2 exams, then turning around and driving back 6 hrs. I definitely am not a fan. Because of these, and the ALWAYS late scheduling of them, I am having to delay the MSPE (due to lack of final grades). I just hope and pray I get a residency spot through connections. If not, it's not looking too good.
