Elective rotations at non-affiliated sites for SMU students

    Advertisements

Thought it would be nice to share where we could possibly do rotations at non-affiliated sites. To maintain some type of organization will ask that people list the particular site, and which electives were you approved in:

    Maimonides Medical Center
    Brooklyn, NY
    Electives: Anesthesiology, Gastroenterology & Neurology

    Long Island Jewish Hospital
    Manhasset, NY
    Elective: Pathology

    Lenox Hill Hospital
    New York, NY
    Electives: Pathology

    LSU-Shreveport
    Shreveport, Louisiana
    Elective: Pathology

    NYU-Bellvue Hospital
    New York, NY
    Electives: Medical Toxicology

    UT-Southwestern
    Dallas, Texas
    Elective: Medical Toxicology

    Banner Good Samaritan Hospital
    Pheonix, Arizona
    Elective: Medical Toxicology

You will note that I double booked certain rotations, this was in part due to applying to multiple sites for the same rotation. Didn't think I would have gotten approval for as many as I did.

Hope this helps, and hopefully others can contribute. Let us focus on sites that our school does not have an affiliation with.

talked to a few people about electives, and found out that coordinators for some electives were angry that IMG students would double book for rotations and not cancel or just not show up... thanks for the info

Yea its in the city(NYC). Its in a very nice area, upper east side, manhattan. The apartments there are NOT cheap. You can live on top of a supermarket in a studio/closet for $1800 a month.
Everyday I strive to be the person my dog thinks I am.

You can call the office of medical education (the number is on the website). You then are given the contact info to which ever dept you want to rotate in. If the department is willing to take you, they contact the medical education dept and then you are mailed an application. I picked up the application in person to save time.

Currently rotating at Maimonides for Anesthesia, and I am having tons of exposure. They have me intubating patients, inserting IVs, inserting LMAs, etc. Just noticed that the learning environment at this hospital is awesome. The school should definitely try getting affiliated with this hospital at least for electives.

For those of you seeking a good 2 week elective try Anesthesia at Maimonides. Specifically ask for the Peds Anesthesia attending. He is an awesome teacher and lets you run the show as you move on. Highly recommend this rotation. My experience here far exceeds what I have experienced at other hospitals. My two weeks of Anesthesia I have seen more cases in the OR than when I was at Wyckoff for three months during surgery... Only problem is hours: 6:40am for morning lectures and you are lucky to get out before 4pm.
