Looking for UK students and Veterinary students...

    Advertisements

    Hi all,

I'm a mature (29yrs) student from the UK and I've got a place in the January class of 3rd year pre-vet.

Wondering if there are any current students on this board from the UK who can give some UK-orientated advice?

Also - any vet students on the board??? UK vet students would be fantastic!! And anyone with experience of 3rd year pre-vet...?

    Thanks!

    Dan.

    might help

    Hi Dan,

I'm not form the UK and I not a vet student either, but I think I can shed some light on the pre-vet programme.
I just completed the third year of the pre-medical programme and will be starting med school next month. The pre-vet and pre-med third year programmes are very similar; both include introductions to the basic sciences : human anatomy ( yes, pre-vets take human anatomy!!), biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, and in your case, intro to vet. science. Everyone who started out in the pre programmes is high in praise for it, as they say it gave them an extra edge over the other students.....the school really does prepare you well for vet and med school.
You may be surprised to hear that the majority of students who have enrolled in the 3rd year pre-vet prog, and subsequently were admitted to vet school are from the UK.
I'm not sure if that was much help, but if you have any more q's I'll be happy to put you in contact with a good friend of mine who completed the 3rd year and will be starting vet school in august ( he's from the US, but he might be of a bit more use)

    Thanks!

    Hi PJ

Thanks for the info - i'd be really interested in talking to your vet school friend. I wouldn't mind a book list as well - proabbly easier to get this from him though.

The reason many UK students do final year pre-med / pre-vet is that in this country we go straight to med school / vet school after we have finished normal school (your college??) at 18 yrs. (rather than do a related degree first). Because of this, both vet and med schools run 5 year courses rather than 4. In my case, I have a degree and a postgraduate masters degree - but they're not related to the biological sciences, so I'm required to go through final year pre-vet.

    Thanks again,

    Dan.
