Fellow Vet School Applicants and Students

    Advertisements

I have no real question to post. Just wanted to make a topic string for vet school students to ask vet specific questions .

On second thought I do have a question, if there are any vet students out there ... How do you like SGU and do you feel you are getting enough surgery experience??

For those vet applicants inquiring about stats I will restate what I heard from SGU:
"As far as averages of who gets accepted, we generally see an average
GPA of a 3.2 and GRE test scores between 1050-1100. It is important to note that we thoroughly read your letters of recommendations and essays and they can play a big role in acceptance as well, along with your work experience."

Applications for fall are still being accepted, although I do not know how many seats are still available. The response time has been pretty decent. The admissions counselor in New York is named Lucy Garraway.

    Good Luck

I was just accepted to the SGU Vet school! It only took 2 weeks after my interview--did you have yours yet? THAT was tough. I read all these posts about how laidback the interview was, but mine was 3 hours and SO intense! My interviewer was a very nice vet, though, and she said she was tough because she wanted to be selective about who her future colleagues were. Anyway, yeah, I'm going down in August and would like to talk to other future vets too! I started a Yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sgufuturevets/ to maybe get us out of this medical school forum...though it's nice to be a part of this group too.

I had mine last week. It was totally lax. The essay was easy since I knew the topics in advance. The talking part was silly. Usual questions like: why you wanna be a vet, how do feel about moving to a culturally different country, explain any academic weakness, are you aware of any ethical dilemmas within the veternary field, what animal experience do you have, volunteer experience or community service.

The vet who interviewed me, Dr. Boss, was very lax. I wrote my essay while he spayed a cat and I went over and started the interview while he stiched her up. Then we went back to the office and filled out the St. George's questionaire together. He was very cool though. A Ross graduate himself. Truth be told I did a better job interviewing/interrogating him then he did me.

I will check out your site. Hopefully I will be getting my accpetance letter soon. Out of curiosity what were your stats like. Me a 3.2 overall, 3.4 science, 3.5 in major, 1150 GRE. volunteer zoo experience, miniscule vet practice experience, school animal research experience.

    Congratulations and good luck.

Yup, I imagine since the vet program just started a couple years ago. He got involved 3 years back when his head tech applied to St. George. When she wa invited to interview she asked him to check out the school. While he had nothing bad to say about Ross (they both get you where you want to go), he says given the choice he would have gone to St. George's.

Reasons for St. George vs Ross:
    1. Better infrastructure: student support
    2. Class size
    3. More US instructors
    4. Safer island
    5. Better and prettier campus
    6. Smaller student body means more attention

    Down side
    Slightly more expensive

These are his reasons, not mine. But a visit to Ross's website should confirm it for you.

    bringing pets to grenada

I have also been accepted to St. George's for this fall (was accepted for last year but had to defer my admissions for a year). I have already been to visit Grenada and can definately say that the campus is definately nicer than Ross (visited there about 2 yrs ago). I do have one question for anyone out there, I will be bringing 2 large dogs with me to Grenada (both 100lbs) and am very worried about shipping them on a cargo plane and not being with them. Does anyone know of anyone who has brought pets to Grenada or St. Kitt's? I have been told that many of the vet students bring pets with them and when I visited the campus I even saw a picture of a student with 2 Great Danes (wonder how she got them there)! Anyway, any info you guys have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Still waiting for my reply

I interviewed 6 business days ago. I am in "final determination" which I hope is a good thing.

I have heard SGU vet is comprised mostly of females, I know UF is much the same. I have heard other schools offer much the same demographics. What I find funny is that almost all the vets in my area are male. Kinda weird. Has anybody noticed a bias in their neighborhoods? I find interesting how males don't seem to interested in animal practice or are they just not smart enough to get in ... hmmm.

I think thats like admissions lingo for "tribal council", just that you hope you are getting voted onto the island...

You could make the same argument for human medicine. Most older doctors are male however med school classes are nearing (and in some cases surpassing) 50% women. I would have to pin the change on a change in society. Women are no longer restricted to the home and it is much easier to pursue a career (as opposed to 30-40 years ago). Also, it takes a special kind of person to go into animal med (caring, compassionate, emotive, loving of animals, etc.) and those qualities are not necessarily supported in men these days. You will also notice the ethnic differences between human and animal medicine - just take a look at the makeup of the SGU vet and med schools. BTW, check out the safety in St. Kitts. No sense in losing your life in pursuit of your dream.
