    Last Minute Questions

    Advertisements

    For all those that have been in the dorms on the island, please let me know the answers if you remember;
    1) Washing machines and dryers take US quarters?
    2) Do we need to bring a shower curtain for the double kitchenette?
    3) What type of info do we need to open an account in Grenada? Check from our US bank? Traveler's checks?
    4) Do they generally graze over your luggage when you first get there and really only focus on the lap top?
    5) Do we need any locks for lockers (ie anatomy)?

Any help would be great. I read some threads from 2003, however times are a-changing.
    THANKS!

I never lived in the dorms, but I can help a little:

All laundry facilities on both True Blue and Grand Anse campus are free.

I don't know...I do know shower curtains can be purchased at a store in spiceland mall.

You will need your passport and I think maybe another picture ID such as drivers license. They will accept either a check from US account or travelers checks but the personal check will take around a month to clear, so either cash or travelers check would probably be best.

From my experience, they will really only care about the laptop. If they ask I always say the rest of my luggage has toiletries and clothing and have NEVER been searched beyond the laptop.

There are no lockers in the anatomy lab, however, the new vet lecture building and the gym (in the student union) have lockers and bringing a lock isn't a terrible idea...but they can be purchased down here for around 12 - 20 ECD (if I remember correctly...maybe less). I believe putting locks on the gym lockers is not recommended because they threaten to cut them off.

No prob with the questions...as you integrate into SGU SVM please stick around these forums to answer the questions of others so its not mostly me and a few others.

    Some More Fun Questions

Glad to know those answers... and of course I'll stick around.

    More Questions:
    1) What about dish soap and laundry detergent?
    2) Expensive or worth leaving behind?
    3) Do you know anyone that has taken scuba lessons on the island?
    4) And the ever important, should I bring my favorite tequilla? Cause in Cali it is cheaper then other places in the US.

Too heavy to bring down, buy them here. I buy some cheapo liquid laundry detergent for 17 ECD and cheapo dish soap. Brand names will be most expensive. FYI I was buying some really cheap dish soap for awhile until I discovered one of the listed ingredients was formaldehyde. I stopped buying that brand but I bet it was tough on bacteria.

Many people learn or continue their certification in SCUBA while here. I got my advanced cert last summer. The bazaar on the Sunday before school starts will probably have at least 1 operator there.

I am quite good friends with Dive Grenada and, of course, would recommend them as they are definitely one of the less expensive operators. There are 6 (recently up from 5) operators in Grenada and probably a few who do it on a less official basis. Basic PADI certification cost will be maybe $300 or so but make sure you ask about the student rates because this will be quite a bit lower, at least at Dive Grenada.

My wife and I dive as much as our budget allows and anyone who can swim even a little would be foolish to live down here and not give it a try. Grenada is not the best diving in the caribbean, but its still the caribbean.

I have never bought tequila here, I know it is for sale at the grocery store but I don't think the selection is outstanding. Rum is almost cheaper than water but if you have a specific brand of tequila you like, it would be best to bring some and ration it appropriately.
