    2014 residency application dilemma

    Advertisements

My stats are A's and B's in clinical rotation. Step 1 207. Step 2 cs pass on 2nd attempt. Now... Im taking step 2 ck on September 6th... so the scores won't be back until Oct 2nd. Should I go ahead and apply on Sep 15th with step 1 and step 2 cs scores or should I wait till step 2 ck scores arrive late and then apply? I'm applying to family and Psych. How much will 2 weeks being late affect me?

I would go ahead and apply. The programs will get updated when your score is back. Make sure you pass CK. Having a failure on CS is going to hurt you and you will be asked about it, so make sure you have a reason or what you did differently to pass the 2nd time. Apply to many programs and go to all your interviews you can. Good Luck!

Can't believe it is that season again. We start interviewing here next month!

Thanks Crispy, I think I will do just that and maybe call some programs to let them know the score is back

Email to let them know. Residency coordinators get hundred of calls a day. They won't remember. Email is much better to communicate with them. What are you applying to? If it is Family medicine I recommend East TN Bristol program.

Well I dont know if programs screen based on a failed CS but many programs will screen you out based on a failed step 1 or Ck...

I dont think your CK will be late. My wife will be taking the CK at the end of Sept and I think she ll be on the later side but not super late considering all the rest of her app is in... its better to make sure you take a little extra time and pass on first try or do the best you can than take it early and barely pass or fail.

sorry, but if your scores aren't reported by sept 15 and available for download on that date....its late...will it greatly affect you? that is the million dollar question isn't...if you get enough interviews you probably will think it wasn't a big deal....but if you don't? well it will suck if the reason you don't match is because you had late reporting step score...and with all the things that are out of your control, having your step scores and eras application in on time is one of the few things you do have control...

and a failed CS...holds a lot more weight than you think...for an IMG its a HUGE red flag...

and sorry, nrai, but you seem pretty blaise about this...especially since you are couples matching to boot... hope things work out...

Having your CK score in early October or late September isnt "super" late IMO.. yes of course having it in on Sept 15 is best... but of all the things that could effect your application getting your CK scores in 2 weeks late is not the end of the world IF everything else is in (LORs, CS, transcripts..etc).. but thats my opinion based on speaking to adcoms and speaking with people who have gone through the process. Of course give yourself the best shot you can by getting in everything as early as possible.

Having a fail on the CS is a HUGE deal, a lot of programs will automatically reject you without even looking. The ones that do overlook it, make sure you have a good excuse as they will ask, and when it comes to ranking, a failed CS will affect you greatly. This is from personal experience.

I never said that having failed the CS was a little matter... it is a red flag.. like I said many programs do screen based on first pass of the step 1 and step 2ck... CS i m not sure of their policies,as I was researching on program requirements almost all of them said step 1 and CK must be passed on first attempt and most said they preferred scores about 200 (some said 210)... all I m saying is the ramifications of CS fail is less clear BUT its likely to be treated like any other USMLE fail..

At this point just do your best.. thats all that any of us can do.

Hello Guys. Thank you all for the input. Steps are again (207, 205, CS 2nd attempt).

I received 2 interviews which I am very grateful for. My LORS are from IM and peds attendings all stating I would be great in family medicine even though none are from family medicine attending which I know is troublesome. The earliest Family medicine rotation I managed was in January, which won't help for this year match but I'm already preparing for next years and I'm studying hard for the Step 3.

Given the case, just wondering, is Oct when most invites are "sent" or are the majority of Family invites sent in November?

I also tried volunteering for a month in a nearby family medicine clinic for a family LOR.. unfortunately for me, I realized too late that the attending cannot write proper English. Barely can type in key board. Feeling hopeless.
