Beth Israel for Psych in NYC

    Advertisements

Hi everyone. I will be starting my first rotation this january 2. I am very nervous. Can anyone explain everything that I should do from now til then? I already found a place to live. But in terms on books, or white coat, or anything. All help will be appreciated.

    Thanks!

It is psych. No white coats, no ties, and you can wear a stethoscope if you want, but you will not use it. All you need for this rotation is to know the First Aid psych for the boards, everything else doesn't matter, and just act interested, and you will do fine. Once again.. it is only psych.

Thanks! When you say First aid Psych for the boards, do you mean the psych section in "First Aid Step 2 CK" or the book "First Aid for the Psych Boards"?

I would start out with first aid psychiatry specifically for the rotation, not step 2. Psychiatry for the boards is what I would read before my psych boards. What I want my students know is how to take a psychiatric history and also take a good neuro exam. That is where learning psychiatry starts since it is a field that is dependent on one's ability to collect relevant and accurate information. The differential diagnosis, medication, treatment plan, and disposition is what i consider the job of the resident to teach the students.

FA for Step 2 has a really good psych section. My group had a really intense psych rotation and that is what we used.
My boyfriend did psych at Beth Israel and found they give you lots of freedom if you know what you're doing (do consults on your own, write orders on your own, etc). They do keep you there till 5 every day even if you have nothing to do which can be a waste of time. Since it is your first rotation your experience will be a bit different but overall I think it will be fine.
