    California rotations

    Advertisements

I have done some searches on california rotations but most information i've found were old and not specific. I hope to have some upper termers who are doing or recently did core rotations in California sharing some of their experience regarding clinical placements. gaps between cores, movings, .... (especially those who started in May)
    Thanks.

I did a few of my cores at San Joaquin. I started in August with OB and Psych in NY then had IM and Surgery at SJGH, and Peds in Miami. Moving around is not as bad as I initially thought. There was only one 2 week gap between SJGH and Miami, but we do not get a xmas break so it pretty much evens out with students at a clinical center. We also dont have a 6 week ATYR so we actually finish by the 3rd week of June. SJGH is pretty chill, maybe a little too much that it can be easy to slack off especially if you're from cali. Miami was good and I even did my peds elective there.

The only disadvantage to moving around is finding a place to live for short term. In Queens you're on your own, and have to check out craigslist or ask around. Miami has housing. And its pretty easy to find a place to live in Stockton as long as you have a car. Otherwise SJGH has "housing" on campus, though I wouldn't recommend it for long-term even though other students have done it.

what's the housing at SJGH like? I haven't been able to find any sort of specific info about it. I know it's the old psych unit and that they're doubles though they try to put you in by yourself, but what's it actually like? do they have internet there?

And while we're at it, who did you contact about the miami housing? is it the hospital or SGU?

I never peronsally visited the housing at SJGH. Those who stayed there told me theres no internet and they used their phone's data plan to tether to their laptop. Also its more like a dorm type layout, so theres a shared bathroom, kitchen, etc for the whole place. Personally, I didn't want to stay there for 6 months, but if you do you're saving several hundred dollars compared to renting a place somewhere nice in stockton.

For Miami, contact your clinical coordinator, and they'll tell you who you should contact (its part of SGU).

Thanks for the info. I'm only going to SJGH for 4 weeks so I think I can stand living in a dorm again. No internet is a killer though but easy enough to get around.

It's good to know that there is no large gaps between rotations. Did Clined schedule all your core rotations at the beginning of third years or did you have to wait for the next scheduling while doing your rotations? What do you think of the teachings and the whole rotations at SJGH in general? How many SGU students were rotating with you while you were there? Do you think it's difficult to get clinical placements there?
Is it difficult to find housing near SJGH? although Stockton is not far from the hospital, I still prefer to stay nearby for convenience. I'm sorry to ask you so many questions. I really appreciate you taking your time and sharing all these information with us. Thank you.

The 4G mobile internet would solve your internet problem but it probably comes with a one year contract. It's something to look into.

My experience was that Clined scheduled the next rotation during my rotation. I have nonetheless known people who were in the situation where Clined didn't provide them rotation info until last minute, or at all. Sometimes you have to be on their case.

What do you think of the teachings and the whole rotations at SJGH in general?
I've been at better places with respect to teaching, but you do get a pretty good sense of what it's like to be an intern.

How many SGU students were rotating with you while you were there?
There are usually 5 people in each rotation split up into different teams.

Do you think it's difficult to get clinical placements there?
No. I feel like the limiting factor would be the school, if anything. The hospital seems to want people rotating through there.

Not that difficult. Your best bets are finding housing about 10 minutes north. If you're short on money and are willing to put up with the shortcomings, the dorm is on the hospital campus and is $50/month. They are doubles with no internet.

I concur with most of what golding said. I actually had all my core rotations scheduled and confirmed when I started my first rotation, but they do not usually give you the "official" placement letter until a few weeks before the start of the rotation. I kept on emailing my clined coordinator until they confirmed my rotations, so that might have helped.

And like golding said, if you choose not to live on campus, definitely live 10 mins north, which is above March Lane, preferably around the 5, and not too east. South and east of March Lane and the 5 gets shady as you near downtown Stockton. Rent ranges from $500-$800/month.
