    Taking time off during clinicals

    Advertisements

My best friend is getting married next summer and I will be starting clinical rotations in May. I was just wondering about the possibility of taking time off during clinicals. Do we get most weekends off? Will I be able to take more than a weekend off? For your first couple rotations how much flexibility is there?

    Thanks in advance.

depends on your rotation...family and psych you will generally have weekends off..the rest...not so much, but it will depend on the hospital you're doing clinicals.

you however will not be able to take more than sat/sun off at best.

Yeah really depends on the hospital. Nyc hospitals are usually not lenient on days off. But for all my rotations i had sat and sun off unless i was on call.

Can you make sure that a specific weekend you are not on call, or are those pre-determined and set in stone?

Depends on the program. For some places the call schedule was predetermined; in others we were allowed to pick our call days.

For the places I was at, it wasn't a big deal to trade call days between students.

As an aside, if it happens to be a program where they make the call schedule then you want to let the person making the call schedule know as soon as possible. They can often save you the effort of having to trade days.

You get most weekends off, and you can avoid or trade calls if they fall on that particular weekend. Plus, it's not unreasonable to ask for a Friday or Monday off, so you can get a long weekend. You may not even have to make up that day off, depending on where you're at.
