    Question regarding advanced placement programs

    Advertisements

I've been bothering by this for a long time. During the Career Development Day(?), the speaker told us that if we match into a prelim spot without getting the advanced program at the same time, we will be screwed because advanced programs only take PGY2 students. But I've also heard ppl have been able to transfer between programs from surgery to radiology, psych to anesthesiology, etc. etc. Can some one give me a definite answer?

well for rads, anes, anything that has an advanced start (ie pgy 2) if you are able to find an open advanced spot, you will have had to do a pgy 1 yr somewhere and in something that will give you credit, so say you match into a prelim spot but fail to match an advanced spot, and complete the prelim spot, you will need to find an unexpected pgy 2 opening for the next yr...if you enter the match the following yr, you would have a gap of a yr, since the advanced spot would be for 2 yrs later...

psych you would have to start over since it is a catagorical match not an advanced one.

I understand for advanced programs you start 1 year after you match. Gap isn't too big of a deal, as long as you can match, right? how is that "screwed"? I get the impression from him that if you dont match advanced with prelim, then you are stuck and can't go anywhere.

well there is no guarantee that you will match the 2nd time around..after all you will be a little less competitive than the people applying as 4th yrs...and there is no guarantee that you will find an open pgy 2 spot...

some places will convert a prelim to a cat spot, esp if they like you and you have proven yourself.

Not necessarily. Psych programs have anywhere from 6 to 9 months of non psych rotations such as internal medicine, family, neuro, etc. in PGY-1. So some programs will give creidit for that year. The missing psych rotations would have to be made up using elective time. But one would have to find a program with an open PGY-2, which is not impossible but still difficult.
